Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
I have had a little more time than usual to be inside the house, due to the appalling weather conditions that we have been experiencing recently. It has been rain, Rain and more RAIN. Just the opposite of conditions recently experienced in Australia.
Anyway, it has given me time to look through my archives and I have had a surprising amount of fun!
I decided to post some photographs in black and white and will begin with this view of our approach to the the Falkirk Wheel. (I have posted one similar, in colour, but without the presence of people.)
Our route to the wheel was by a footpath, reaching the canal near some locks where a sign directed us towards the canal tunnel.
(If you are unfamiliar with the Falkirk Wheel and would like to know more, you can do that by checking my previous upload The Wheel .)
Can you imagine our excitement when, on reaching the further end of the tunnel, we saw a huge, bright semicircle, through which we could discern several huge, silvery arches! To add to that a group of cheerful people came into the frame.
The contrasts between the darkness of the tunnel and the bright sunny exterior, seemed a perfect time to use black and white.
I hope you like it too, and experience a little of the excitement that we felt, Bev :-)

Hello Bev
Good graphism and excellent sharpness, with punchy light contrasts. The fg tunnel arch frames the bg semicircular wheel perfectly. The people add scale. Tfs!

Hello Bev,
I remember this fantastic machinery, and I remember this tunnel, but with people and in B&W it makes a much greater impression. I love the contrasts between dark and light features, the rounded shapes, the depth of the composition, and of course the persons at the end of the tunnel, some of them seen like silhouettes. There is so much that makes this an excellent photo.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Bev
Thanks to the English weather, you had time to look into your archive and post process a picture in B&W!
A long perspective following the canal and at the end of it, under the rounded ceiling a white rounded shape appears, that's the famous wheel. The people silhouettes add life and a scale to the picture.
Cheers

Hi Beverley,
The arch of the tunnel beautifully above the big wheel of Falkirk and created a marvelous effect, aided also with people at the railing.
B&W rightly chosen. I did not have the chance of visitiong this place despite three times in Scotland. What a miss...
Good afternoon,

Amicalement

Hello Beverley, with the wet weather you are not the only one going through their archives!
The black and white presentation works particularly well here, we can feel the darkness around us as we walk with you towards the light. The silvery arches stand out and capture our interest.
The people add an extra element to the scene.
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Olá Beverley,
interessante essa composição mesmo, e acertada a opção pelo P&B, pois realmente o contraste mais forte ficou excelente. Belo trabalho.
Parabéns e Abraço,

Hello Beverley,
Great photo of the Wheel, like I have never seen it before. Superb exposure and contrast between the dark tunnel and the much lighter arches of the actual Wheel in the background. Also the calm water and the silhouettes of the people are excellent here.

Hi Beverley!
Absolutely fine, irreal, queer (and thus: British?)!
An incredible structure, never heard of it before. B&W is good if your are inside a tunnel :-)
One of those images that show you why you are on TE, so thanks for sharing!

Dear Beverley,
This is a photo I would have taken myself proudly! It features strond contrast and composed very wisely. I like how the parapeth and the water-way leads our eyes towards the light areas. The human presence enhances the composition. I had to fave it!
Best Wishes,
Gy!

Hi Jean
An update on parts of Australia - we've had nearly 400 mm in the last week. All our local fires are out and the dam that supplies us is full.
A good spot to be in a storm and a great photo through the tunnel with the near silhouetted people and the wheel beyond.
cheers

Good morning Bev, great storytelling in image ánd words here. The silhouettes coming from the dark tunnel. introduce the eye to the famous wheel. And thru the perspective it looks like a continuation of it. The effect is very nicely graphic! Warm regards, Bert.

Dear Bev
The rich treasures of photo archives need to be opened sometime. :)
I don't even know how many hundreds of gigabytes of photos I have on various devices.
I love the black and white format, in which you play with light and dark.
The tunnel and channel look really impressive, there are some really nice details here
whose shapes are felt in silhouettes.
The presence of people perfectly shows the size and proportions of the openings.
Yes, the contrasts between the darkness of the tunnel and the bright sunny exterior seemed like the perfect time to use black and white.
Warm regards

The light is very well managed here an d the people walk into the frame as just the right moment into the light but not obliterating the semi-circle in the distance.
Black and white was certainly the way to go here.

Hi Bev,
there is no justice in the world, too much rain here while in other locations people pray for it and don't get it.
Very interesting composition. I am a bit surprised to see it in your gallery because I think I remember you criticizing some of my photos for including too much shade.
I would definitely consider cutting it in a different way, but how? I don't know.
I suppose this much darkness with an oval shape at the end makes us feel as if we were looking through a telescope.
Nice to see some people here who help to imagine the scale.
Great idea to use black and white here again.
Very creative, great work,
M

Hello Bev,
I always enjoy a contrast between dark and light, and you handled it perfectly in this photo. The people standing at the far end of the walkway are in a good spot so that they don't block the arches in the background. There are some nice silhouettes, too. I like the feeling of anticipation, when you can see the arches appearing in the distance, and you know that you are getting closer to them.
