Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
Yesterday, I explained how the Falkirk Wheel had been on my bucket list for quite a while and I showed how it came into view as we emerged from the canal tunnel.
Today, I am posting a more entire view of the wheel, which I found to be an incredible piece of technology, as well as a thing of beauty. It looks so much better opened in a new tab or in Beta.
My photograph shows the upper canal, supported by the stanchions, and terminating in the wheel. Below is the lower canal, with the lower compartment of the wheel.
There is a barge in the lower section and a barge just entering the upper section. When the barges are completely secure in their compartments, the wheel will rotate, so that the barges will be either lifted or lowered, to their respective places.
I will add a workshop, showing the wheel partly turned here .
This is an amazing invention and is supported by other activities to make a worthwhile destination for the whole family.
Thanks for your interest, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
I got so curious about this technical miracle I had to search for more on the internet. I found a fascinating film on YouTube showing in real time how the boats are carried to the other level, one going up, the other down. This was no doubt worth an excursion. The fine light and bright boats enhance the photos, even though the marvellous wheel doesn't really need any such assistance to be enjoyed.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
An amazing photo of the Wheel, you had so much better weather than when I was there. The elegant design looks fantastic in front of the green and blue background and the small boats are well included in the foreground.

Hi Beverley,
interesting and good view over these techinical masterpieces. I like the upper part where the canal seems to hang free in its round open pillars.
Thanks and regards,
Gerrit

Hello Beverley,
What a huge height difference between both canals!
It's indeed a fantastic piece of technology.
Wonderful bright and clear presentations.
Still, I think I should be able to see with my own eyes how it works to really do justice to the Falkirk Wheel.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Beverley, impressive piece of technology helping the navigation on the upper and the lower canal. That equipment should be costly. Fine colors, good image quality, instructive photo report, regards.

Hello Bev, Seeing these pictures I want to see it even more. It is really amazing how it works and strange that it uses so few energy. It must be a great experience to be in these wheels. spectacular view. And the Workshop is fantastic too. It is really an engineering marvel.
Kind regards Malgo

Hello Bev,
Like Gert I was curious about how the barges got from point A to point B so I looked at a You-tube video. The boat at the bottom is arriving for upwards transport via the wheel and the one at the top is departing. I have been through a loch on the Yangzi River 3 Gorges in China and that was an interesting experience. Tfs!

Hello Bev ,
A superb capture of the iconic Falkirk Wheel .
Some Bretons think that it would be a good idea to buid a similar one in Guerledan ...

Hi Bev
you made one mistake.
that WS should be saved as a main post! haha :) its THAT good.
the WS is bold and shows how massive this structure is. this main post is more artistic, and almost like a postcard (in a good way - you know i love postcard views). and I recall saying to you I don't think I've ever seen this before....well, I take it back. Now that you've posted this main view, I HAVE seen this before, its very familiar now.
you're right, a thing of beauty and while also being a great technological beast. what a wonderful shot in this light. cheers

Hi Bev,
I am glad you showed it for various angles, they are all contributing better to my understanding of the construction.
Great composition here with the boats making nice foreground and the structure set against natural blue and green colors.
Great sky, fantastic weather -helped very much to color the scene.
I have to put it on my list of places to visit now :)
Excellent reportage,
M

This is indeed amazing. I had to explore online to find a video to actually understand its mechanics and overall function. Does it only lift these barges or any small boats meeting the dimensions of the lift? Can people ride these boats through the lift? Be an interesting ride. I have not seen anything like it in the US. Really cool to see !!! Thanks

bev
really a curious structure. here I can imagine it works like a lift, taking the bow with waters and the boat inside to the lower part and doing the other way round.amazing place and photos. TFS.
take care
