Photographer's Note
This is a haaf net fisherman with his haaf beam carried across his shoulders. Haaf is a viking word as this traditional fishing method practiced on the Solway Firth goes back to the vikings. The haaf beam is usually wooden, a kind of three legged goal post type construction with the net strung across the beam and legs. This is carried into the water by the fishermen as the tide comes in or goes out (see workshop) No doubt you have guessed that the hessian sack on his shoulders will carry the fish if his luck is in.
Haaf net fishing is under threat these days and fishing hours over time have been restricted and there is talk of the salmon having to be tagged and recorded when caught and even the end of haafing all together. It is for this reason that I hope to take more photographs before the end of the short season, with only seven weeks or so to go.For my part I will be sorry to see the end of haaf netting. here is another photo I posted previously.

Hi Bev,
A very interesting photo and note. I Sweden we call this "håv" which is pronounced with a long open vowel like the vowel in "all". Also a very good portrait of this man, I hope he can see this upload!
Kind regards
Gunnar

Hello Bev. the skillfully realized Portrait pleases me very well. Interesting also the intensive view of the man into the camera. In addition an informative text. Altogether top. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hello Bev,
The choice of a landscape format for this picture has given a portrait of unusual strength. The haaf beam's diagonal splits the composition neatly into mainly dark and light halves - this adds even more to the power of the photograph.
Excellent sharp rendering of the fisherman's strong facial features too - I also very much like his steady gaze into the camera lens.
Well done!
Kind regards,
Peter.

Hello, Bev.
I've just come upon this one having made some comments about your other picture on TL of today.
Now, this one again has composition based on diagonals though perhaps not quite as strongly so as in the TL picture of your husband. But the exposure here is absolutely perfect with lots of details in the darkest shadows and in the lightest parts.
As Peter (graffer) has just said, there is excellent eye contact with the subject - you can almost feel his friendly strong personality. I suspect that, because of his profession, he is a good friend of yours and that has helped him relax for the picture.
An excellent photograph and, of course, an excellent and interesting note to go with it.
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Bev. Interesting post, this looks like a hard way to catch a fish but I guess as the prize is salmon the work is worth it. Nice capture, good sharpness and colours. Thanks for sharing.
Have a good weekend, Paul.

Hi Bev, a nice sharp portrait with good natural colours. Along with your notes it tells us an interesting story. I hope the bureaucrats don't succeed in ending this ancient tradition, surely they can't be affecting the stocks that much?
cheers

Hello Bev,
This is a fine portrait and I like the diagonal composition and tight cropping. I also enjoyed the interesting note. I notice that my brother says that the Viking word "haaf" in modern Swedish is "håv", meaning a kind of net. That was what I thought too, but then I found on the internet that haaf is the same word as Swedish "hav", meaning sea and pronounced with a long a as in haaf.
Kind regards,
Gert

This is a really good portrait Bev. Interesting note too.
I like the tilt, and combined with the direct eye contact it makes for a strong and dynamic photo.
Good work.
Cheers,
Ben
