Photographer's Note
On the stone an Old Irish inscription is translated as 'this place, bequeathed by Ternoc, son of Cernan the Little under the patronage of Peter the Apostle'. He died around 714 - 716, so the stone must have been erected in the early 700's AD, making it the earliest datable stone monument in Ireland. It is decorated with ten crosses and excavations in 1966 and 1968 uncovered a number of stone built and dug graves nearby. Close to the pillar are several small stones, some with crosses.
thanks for looking :)

Very strong primary element. The use of vignetting really enhances the over all composition and lighting balance. TFS

Hello Gary,
Good to bring this witness of old Irish history. Brought in clear colours and the clouds in the sky converge to the stone. Shadow well captured.
Well done.

Super shot and well presented. Must make the effort and shot this myself. Been going to a lot of these sites lately, loads of them throughout the country and lots going un-photographed.
Think this stone has an Oghum inscription on it as well, those lines near the base (left hand side) may be part of it?

Trev.

Hi Gary,
At first I wondered, what is that?! And why is it worth a photograph? But reading your note and watching a bit longer, the importance comes to me. Very nicely exposed and nice off center placement. I like it.
Have a good weekend!

Hi Gary,
We had not seen you for a long time on TE, glad to see you again :) The subject is very interesting, I often heard of these ogham stones but could not see any when I was in Ireland. I go to Northern Ireland in a few weeks, so I will try to see this one. But it will be difficult to take such a beautiful picture ! The framing is perfect and the low POV makes the stone more impressive. The light is fantastic and that gives lovely golden colours to the stone. I love too the beautiful sky.
Regards,
Olivier
