Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
I love history so it was a great treat to visit this ancient site.
This photograph shows part of the pre-historic stone circle at Avebury. It is a large, stone complex in the Marlborough Downs, the largest stone circle in the world. This circle features one of the most impressive henges in Britain as well as the remains of a stone avenue. It was originally erected about 4,500 years ago.
I was attracted to this huge stone as it appeared to have been sculptured, though I am sure it is just the effects of weathering, over the millennia.
I will add a second photograph as a workshop, which shows a wider view of the circle.
I do recommend that you look at 'Avebury Then' where you will find a really good reconstruction of what Avebury would have looked like when originally erected.
Thank you for stopping by.
I hope you enjoy seeing this ancient, Neolithic monument. Have a good day, Bev :-)

Hi Bev,a very interesting site that I did not know, perhaps because the competition from Stonehage, fomoso all over the world, affects its visits and fame. Two beautiful photos with excellent details on one of the stones in the main photo and a wide view to get an idea of how big the circle is, top quality and .... a lot of luck with the weather. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Beverley,
It is an ancient monument, evidence of people who were thinking of leaving some great mark behind, for future explorer and scientists.
It seems that each stone is a sculpture by itself, looks aalike - but not similar.
Fine scale on both perspectives photographed.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Bev,
This looks like an interesting sculpture park, involving rather long walks between the different art works. The one you placed in the foreground really looks like something created by an artist (who even signed it at the bottom). ;-)
Places like this are truly fascinating, not lest because we will probably never know exactly what they were used for, or how. What kind of rituals may have been performed here?
The note also made me look up the word "henge", which brought me an interesting lecture about etymology: "Back-formation is the process of creating a new lexeme by removing actual or supposed affixes. The resulting neologism is called a back-formation".
;-)
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Bev,
I visited Stonehenge in September 2011, it is new to me for the site in your photo. The point of view is showing the details of the stones of the Avery circle. The light is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello Bev
Memories for me (and for you too probably) of Castlerigg Stone Circle that we visited in the Lake District a few years ago. But you had much better weather when you visited Avebury previously. I seem to remember taking a group of Travel and Tourism students there some years ago. The course they were on was colloquially known as BTEC Going On Trips...
Good composition with the foreground standing stone, and figures in the middle distance giving a sense of scale.
Kind regards
Will

hi Bev nice image. Sad that this is overlooked when compared to Stonehenge, but equally if not more important. Still a mystery as to why!

Hello Beverley, I agree with you that the very large standing stone makes an excellent focal point, and a good lead in line to the rest of the picture.
The sunlight brings out all the holes and irregularities of the stone.
The people although quite distant are a good inclusion to the shot.
We visited Avebury many, many years ago, I don't expect that is has changed very much!
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Bev
Great (pre)historical scenery, well captured. I've visited Castlerigg and Stonehenge, this one is still on my list. Oh, that list...

Hi Bev,
On a fingerprint I noticet only the nearest stone. And bigger size revealed that these ancient stones cover actually a pretty large space. Sidelight looks very good on that eroded stone. This place really is a great mystery of old times.

Hello Beverley,
What a beautiful and amazing place to visit this must be. The ancient stone circle looks great and impressive. You placed this one stone very well in the left hand side foreground with many of the others scattered around the background. It was a very nice and bright day also.

I saw many megalithic monuments in portugal, most of them are tombs with three large stones and a larger one above as a roof. curious as these structures were preserved because the medieval people thought they were magic.. an in fact they are.. haha
marvelous this circle of stones so well shown in this two images.
take care

Hello Beverley,
Both pictures could have been excellent main uploads.
I like the beautiful lines of clouds in the sky on the photo in the WS.
Do you really think what we see on the huge stone on the foreground here are only the effects of weathering?
I thought that wind and weather over the years have obscured the carvings.
A very extraordinary place.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Bev, Beautiful picture of this stone circle. The stones look quite huge and the circle is very big. It reminds me of the circle in Castleridge, which I visited with our TE friends many years ago. Those were the days my friend, We thought they'd never end. But TE is slowly daying. The friends I met there are all gone. The area in Castleridge is more beautiful with the hills around.
There is a circle in Karahunj, in Armenia, with smaller stones and not so big, but dating (maybe) mainly from the Middle Bronze Age to the Iron Age. It is unknown on TE. maybe I will show it one day.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Beverley,
For a moment I thought you had been to Easter Island, but this is equally interesting. Everyone knows of Stonehenge but few are aware of the existence of this place. Tfs!

Hi Bev,
I think it is the same county where the Stonehenge is.
It is quite far away for me. I have been in the south except for London only once. I managed to see Stonehenge but I needed to focus on essentials. Traveling around UK and staying overnight is so expensive, that one can really go abroad for that price with a more predictable weather.
But of course I am tempted to see some more in the south.
This one I would title "an ancient tablet" or something like that.
I can see it is hue indeed.
The couple walking there adds a nice feeling of scale.
Very well done,
M

Bonjour, chère Bev,
Ces pierres levées sont fascinantes et gardent un mystère encore préservé (quand bien même, l'on évoque certains traits historiques à leur propos).
Très bonne présentation.
Amitiés.

Hi Bev,
You chose a good angle to view these weathered old stones. The sunlight brings out the details on the foreground rock which make it look like it has been carved, as you say. Excellent composition with the one stone dominating the left and other stones receding on the right.

Hi Bev.
These megalithic rocks occupy a great extension, whenever we see them in some place we wonder about their meaning and use that the first settlers would give these places and how they moved them, because there are places where there is no rock quarry nearby.
Very nice coloring, in some very attractive tones.
Good brightness management and magnificent sharpness.
Very well done. My congratulations.
All the best and have a good start to the week.
