Photographer's Note

It was late and noisy. Flashing lights were shining through my curtains. Shrills of pneumatic drills and winches could be heard outside, what was happening? I just had to have a look...

And when I did I could see that one of London's arterys had burst open, spilling red all over the place.

It seems the pressure was low, the light dim. It was a sad affair but luckily the commander was there trying to take control.

In London, buses play a vital role in the city's transport system. There are over 700 different bus routes and almost 2 billion trips are made each year.

Here are a few facts about London's bus network:

* Bus usage is growing at its fastest rate since 1946
* Bus ridership grew more than 38 per cent between 1999/00 and 2004/05
* Buses in London now carry the highest number of passengers since 1968
* In the year to March 2005, there were 1.79 billion passenger trips on the network
* Bus mileage in London is higher than at any time since 1957, with 450 million km operated in 2004/5
