Photographer's Note
This was taken in Swaledale in The Yorkshire Dales National Park on one of the rare sunny days we had last year and was at the end of autumn when the light starts to get good for most of the day. We had had lunch at the Tan Hill Inn, which is England’s highest pub and was used in the Everest double glazing advert. It’s also located in the middle of nowhere. After lunch, and with the sun fairly low, we were making our way back to 'civilisation' when we passed this typical Dales barn. It was the winding track that caught my attention.
The Yorkshire Dales has these stone barns in abundance. They were traditionally used for storing hay and housing cattle in winter but many have fallen into disrepair.
For the map, I have no idea exactly where it was taken, but I have put in the map reference for the Tan Hill Inn. The image was taken about one or two miles on the road going east, if you want to trace the road on the map. You will also see what I mean when I said 'in the middle of nowhere' ;D
ISO100 FL50mm,

Great warm toned autumn light. Steep uphill with curving farm road looks impressive and fits well with vertical framing. Yes, if there's middle of nowhere in England, that would be it.

Hi, Kath.
A pretty rough, dramatic landscape, one we can definitely label as "in the middle of nowhere". Yet, that's exactly where its appeal lies. You made excellent use of angle and lighting to create an intriguing multilayered composition, with the path meandering its way across & those stone barns working as joist anchors to provide extra visual relevance. Gloomy atmosphere, I like it a lot! Have a good day, I'll be seeing you.

Hi Kath.
Very pleasing picture, with those two buildings connected by the sinuous track between them. There's a nice variety of tones in the landscape, and that black cloud hovering just over the horizon, nicely contrasts with the sunlit slope. Great location of the barn in the frame. I like your note, too. But it is a small-ish 'nowhere' you're talking about! Of course, one can feel the remoteness of a place no matter the distance to the next town. I remember feeling quite isolated in some parts of England, especially these dales that you have captured so well here.

Andrew

Just love everyplace located in the middle of nowhere. This is a wonderful graphic situation. Makes me remember those books for kids "connect the dots...". I wish the track was even more visible - if I was a kid with that book I would grab my shining marker and pass on the winding line over and over again ;-) I would also finish the road connecting with the house in the distance. And in the end I would draw a person dressed with a red coat walking somewhere on the way up :)) The house on the corner is my favorite detail. It's where everything starts.

hi Kath,
yes, the winding track is what makes the photo for me, especially with the barn in just the right place to "start" it. pale golden light works well against the dark sky, the contrast adds a punch to this pastoral scene. I've never been comfortable with vertical fromats, but I have to admit that landscape format would not work here, the track need the space. nice work, I like it.

Hi Kath,
Hey... This one hasn't any WS's? :-)
It seems that the absence of trees and "bigger" visual elements facilitated the task of making the compo here. I admire the way you use the textures, the lines and the smooth shapes of the landscape, It's very attractive, in a subtle, quiet fashion, the eyes swing between the two little stone barns, saying hello to the sheep and wondering where is the shepherd (perhaps taking some beers with his friends at the nearest pub, which is probably miles away :-). Wonderful light and colours under that menacing sky.
I wish you have a good time in Scotland.
Regards, José.

The colours are wonderful on this rare sunny day. The fields take on, what is almost a glow!
The lower barn makes a fine starting point from which to follow the the snake-like meanderings of the track, up to the farm.

Hi Kath,
I like a lot this picture because of the light against that dark sky (it would do an interesting play on words in Portuguese because we can use the same word for sky and for heaven ;-)
And I like this picture also because of that way going up quietly by curves to avoid the useless effort to fight against the slope; it is longer but we can benefit from the good moments of the life until arriving at the end. We will arrive there anyway, no need to hurry too much.

How was your short trip to Scotland...I see you've already posted a picture from there. TE has been playing truant again for the last two days, but I think it's stabilised now. The winding path is lovely here leading us from the stone barn in the FG to the other. You got good light here as the sun managed to break through the dark cloud barrier.
