Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
My photograph, today, shows the booking office for the Saltburn Lift. (Much better in the large format.)
The lift was opened on 28th June 1884 and is the oldest remaining waterbalance cliff lift in Britain. It has a height of 120 ft, and the length of the track is 207 ft. It is remarkable for having stained glass windows! It runs from the town's cliff top to Saltburn pier.
There haven been many photographs posted from the top of the cliff, showing the cars travelling down the steep incline (in fact I posted one many years ago) but there are few looking at it from this angle. It was for this reason that I chose this shot rather than those in my workshops.
The offices are brightly painted and you can see the rails of the water balanced lift behind the building.
I will add some different angles of the lift, which I think you might find interesting in my workshops.
Thanks for your interest, Bev :-)

Hi Bev
Looking at this post, I was asking myself why they built this elevator, but the 2 WS convince me, though it seems that there is now a road leading to the sea shore .
Fresh painted housse to welcome the visitors!
Have a nice day. Storms on Bordeaux today, but fresh temperature!

Hello Bev,
I like this nice picture through the perfect view about the lift and the rails.
Also the frontage with half tembered construction makes your picture very attractive.
A nice picture excellent photographed
Composition and presentation are superb.
Very well done, TFS.

Hello Bev,
I take it for granted that the entire complex is a heavily protected cultural heritage. The buildings are so nice and the lift system seems so ingeniously constructed. It is a strong tribute to the early industrial era and must not be left to decay. The three photos are all very informative and I am totally convinced on the great need for this before the age of cars.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
Seeing the WS, recall i saw this place on one post back in time - but this view from shore uphill's and the beautiful red-beams edifice gave a whole different perspective.
A nice one.
Good afternoon,

Hi Bev,
The presence of the persons at the top of the hill has an effect of scale. The point of view is showing the details of the Salburn Lift building. The light is giving good colours output. Have a nice day.

Hello Bev, Indeed, there are more pictures from above, like mine: https://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/North_Yorkshire/Saltburn-by-the-Sea/photo1444249.htm
I do not remember at the moment if I was down there? I was there just after the hurricane. Lovely building.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Beverley,
Three excellent pictures of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, a seaside place in North Yorkshire that I got to know through TE and meanwhile this location has already received a lot of fans on this site.
No idea which of the three is the most beautiful or most interesting photo. Together they form a wonderful whole, but each of the three is worth a main post in itself.
I freely admit that the booking office for the elevator has been turned into a beautiful small building. Small and practical constructions should also look quite beautiful. Apparently something that is considered sufficiently important in Saltburn.
In your first WS picture the sea looks very beautiful with the horizontal lines of the different waves while the steepness of the cliff is perfectly shown in the second picture.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Beverley,
A great photo of the charming office and the lift. The red half-timbered building looks great. If I am not mistaken it was once a pretty well-known place on TE, when there were several members from that area still active, I don't know if you remember that as well. The red parts stand out very well here and you chose a good angle for the picture.

Hi Bev
Good photo, interesting subject. The lift, however doesn't appear to be operating as it looks all locked up.

Hi Bev,
strange feeling: but it is so familiar! I live here already over 8 years. I have never before lived in one place for such a long time, so this view is so well known to me.
The weather is of course a typical one which you get here. Today it is even worse because there is an intense breeze which makes everything wet. Second day in a row.
Nice original point of view at this charming cable car.

A very interesting old lift, a device facilitating access to the sea for tourists and local people, and the building is simply very attractive

very beautiful the structure and the WS give us an idea of the whole structure and how it works. I presume in the old times the village would be safe being up there, but near of the sea anyway. nice job.
take care

Sensational photos of this interesting place, the elevator station seen from a distance is difficult to miss, ideal photos from the top of the cliff with views of the magnificent beach.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent clarity.
Well done. I love it.
Enjoy the weekend.

Hello Beverley, three excellent shots from Saltburn.
I have to say that w/s 2 is my favourite of the three, it shows how high the lift is above the shore, and the most interesting composition.
Once again some interesting shots emerging from your archive.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.
