Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
Much better if opened in the large format by right clicking NEW TAB. It seems to have lost detail in this posting, as compared with the original.
These ruins at Rievaulx are quite spectacular! When you approach them on a path from Helmsley, they seem to grow out of the surrounding fields.
Rievaulx Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery in the north of England, founded in 1132 by twelve monks from Clairvaux Abbey in Burgundy.
Its remote location was well suited to the order's ideal of a strict life of prayer and self-sufficiency with little contact with the outside world.
The abbey grew in status, with the monks slowly abandoning their strict regime over the years. In early 16th century, the abbey was said to consist of 72 buildings occupied by the abbot and 21 monks, with 102 lay employees, and an income of £351 a year. The abbey owned a prototype blast furnace at Laskill, producing cast iron as efficiently as a modern blast furnace. It was one of the great abbeys in England until it was seized under Henry VIII of England in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries.
It is now a listed building under the care of English Heritage who have made the history of the building come alive with their informative displays.
This photograph was from my first visit to the abbey, before the displays had been organised. There is much more visual information to be found now. However, on subsequent visits, the weather was never as beautiful as it was on this day. In fact ... it usually rained!
Have a good day, Bev :-)

Hello Beverley,
This must had been an impressive and big abbey back in time. Still imposing site, an attraction for photography.
A fair distant POV includes most of the complex, good scale and made a fine outcome even as light was mild (humble guess of mine).
Have a nice sunday,
Ike

Beverley, that ancient stonework has a long history well summarized in the photo note. The activities in the abbey stopped several centuries ago. It must be a fascinating site to explore. The visitors can learn about the life of the religious persons in the past. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hello Bev,
These ruins make a great impression today, so it's not hard to imagine how overwhelming they must have been to a visitor 500-600 years ago. This is another one of your well composed photos. The footpath starts neatly at the corner and goes diagonally across the lower part of the view. The low wall and the fence lead us into the photo where we are accompanied by a fair numer of tourists. The light and colours are well handled, as usual.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley, an impressive view of Rievaulx; your point of view includes so much of the ruins.
I remember the Abbey feeling quite remote, as you describe.
Your notes are very informative.
Excellent composition.
Enjoy the rest of your day.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Beverley,
The ruins of this abbey look indeed really spectacular. But England appears to have so many ruins of abbeys.
Too bad it rains that often there. It looks like a place where you can take countless pictures and discover picturesque views over and over again each time from a different angle.
I like the composition with the path that leads through the open gate to the abbey.
Excellent depth, sharpness and clarity.
Best regards, Paul

bev
amazing view, those arches up there looks fabulous and show us how beautiful and powerful was the whole structure destroyed, impressive as they didn't use these buildings, even with other purposes..I guess it was the same idea about Bolsheviks in russia, destroy to prevent a return.
take care

Hello Beverley,
These ruins look amazing and you captured them so well and in an excellent composition, which is so well balanced between the several parts of the complex. The people are also well included and the path and the wall along it make a nice diagonal in the foreground. Superb sharpness and clarity too.

Hello Bev, you also delvel in your deep archive. Masgnificent ruins of this old Gothic abbey. Fantastic especially these arches and windows.
You are surprised reading about the fate of churches in Russia, how they were destroyed or used after the Revolution. But dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII was something similar. Just the rulers didn't one the power and richness of the church.
Best regards MAlgo

Hi Beverley
Amazing ruins, beautiful display of architecture rises upright into the sky and fanned by the fluffy clouds as well. Like the inclusion of the visitors with great colours and looks very inviting to sit on the grass. It's a picture postcard shot. Congrats
Best regards

Hi Bev.
What a pity that these great and wonderful sets of art, were lost by the absolutism of a king, the power in some hands is sterminating, now we are amazed by these ruins, but how could they have come to this day like so many abbeys in various places , Amazing ..... !!!!!
Sharpness, lighting, color, and the magnificent composition; they are all perfectly realized factors, in this precious image.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.
