Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
I have recently been sharing views of Rievaulx Abbey. If you should visit that excellent ruin, you will have time to visit this nearby ruin, Helmsley Castle. The castle was originally constructed in wood around 1120 and was built by Walter l'Espec.
In 1186 began the process of turning the castle to one of stone.
It is positioned on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river Rye. The castle at Helmsley is only 1.9 miles (3 km) from Rievaulx Abbey and it is recorded that Helmsley was often used as a place of safety during periods of instability.
During the English Civil War, the castle was besieged by Sir Thomas Fairfax in 1644. Sir Jordan Crosland held it for the king for three months before surrendering. Parliament ordered the castle to be slighted and much of the walls, gates and part of the east tower were destroyed.
This photo is taken from inside the castle, looking towards what remains of the south curtain wall, which, in its heyday would have been a lot higher than this and would have totally surrounded the castle. You can see the curves of what would have been cylindrical towers (barbican) each side of the gateway. There would have been a drawbridge and a portcullis where you can see the arch.
This was the best angle to take the photo because the substantial bridge became a very useful addition.
Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
This is not quite as impressive as what we have seen from Rievaulx Abbey but obviously worth a detour. You used the bridge well for a nice composition. Most impressive of all is perhaps the knowledge of the great number of medieval ruins that seem to be found all over the UK. I wonder how many castles and abbeys that would have remained intact if it hadn't been for crazy decisions by kings and politicians.
Kind regards,
Gert

The impressive ruins looks to be spread over wide area and view with the wooden bridge enable to appreciate the place, Beverley.
Good allocation of the picture space as the green lawn divided the two parts.
Good afternoon,

Hello Beverley, I have been to Helmsley a few times but for some reason never visited the ruined castle.
You have used the rule of thirds horizontally, which works really well.
The position of the bridge in the composition works well.
I like the rather dramatic sky.
I guess that lots of the stone from the castle would have been used in buildings around the town.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Beverley,
Great photo of these castle ruins also. The horizontal view of the castle works so well in combination with the diagonal line of the bridge in the foreground. The old stones of the castle walls stand out well from the cloudy sky.

Hi Bev,
The bridge is sending my eyes toward the castle which is creating depth. The point of view is showing the details of the ruins of Hemsley castle. It is clear and precise. Have a nice day.

Hello Beverley,
It's great that a visit to the impressive ruins of Rievaulx Abbey can be extended with the nearby Helmsley Castle.
Apparently these ruins have even fewer visitors.
The bridge forms a nice intro to the former castle and also creates more depth in the photo.
Maybe you had to hurry that day because the clouds are getting more ominous.
Best regards, Paul
