Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
Please open the photograph in large format Medieval Walls . The effects of the sunlight and the shadows can be seen so much better.
I wonder if you have heard the term 'vaccary' or understand what it means.
My photograph shows part of a vaccary wall which is located in Wycoller.
A vaccary was a small cattle farm. The fields, for the cows, were separated by these large, irregular, upright slabs of stone, with their lower sections sunk deep into the ground. They are thought to originate in the 13th century.
The term 'vaccary' comes from the mediaeval Latin "vaccaria" with 'vacca' meaning cow. Thus, this was a place where cows were kept.
There are several examples of Vaccary walls around Wycoller, though, as my photograph shows, the upright slabs are not all quite upright, now!
I will add further photographs of the vaccary walls as workshops here and here .
I hope you have found this interesting, Bev :-)

Hello Beverley,
A very nice view of this old and medieval wall. I learnt a new word as well today. :-) It is a very nice landscape, especially with that old large tree over the old stones. Lovely light as well.

Hello Bev,
I recognized the word "vaccary", but I had no idea of its meaning, so I learned something today. Seeing this photo I would hardly have thought of these leaning stones as a wall. I would more likely have thought this was part of a typical old British cemetery with the gravestones leaning in all directions. These three photos are all well composed and well taken, so it's up to each one to pick a favourite. Do we like to go as close as possible or see a wider view? They are all interesting.
Kind regards,
Gert

The composition was superbly made, Beverley, consists of several diff. objects and the old fence-wall against the modern wooden barriers.
There is good view of the left far side through the baked branches.
Wish you a nice afternoon,
Ike

nice view of these ruins of the old fence of stones. I liked the visual effect of them with the nude tree. excellent view and curious image.
PS: here santa catarina state closed the borderline with my state and the largest town near us closed the airport to people who isn't from the own town.. there is a smell of panic in the air, but my city is working yet.]
take care

Hi Bev,3 beautiful photos that perfectly show these old walls used to delimit the fields where the cows ate. In fact the term you wrote, translated into Italian, is "vaccino" that is "of the cow". Interesting post, I recommend not to go too far from home, in Italy the situation is precipitating. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello,
Nice countryside image, it's great that those stones were still there. Well seen.

Hi Bev
you know, looking at that wide angle shot in the WS, it makes me think how easy it would be to walk around here and not really be aware of such important subjects. Its easy to miss if you don't have the knowledge, people would just think its a bunch of stones. The fact that the stones are not upright makes it better in my opinion. I learned something new today reading your note...even better, great post. Cheers

Hi Bev
A great scene. The stones almost look like Celtic standing stones.
cheers

PS Re your last comment on my photos we did have a wander down through Wapping towards Canary Wharf in 2014 - very interesting area.

Bonjour, chère Bev,
Terminées les balades en campagne, admirer la nature, voir un tableau naturel pastoral, confinement absolu par les autorités.
Le virus a frappé !
Alors, je déguste cette prise de vue avec bonheur.
Amitiés.

Hello Beverley,
I like the contrast between the old stone walls and the newer wooden gates. Good sharpness and the various tilted angles of the stones suggest waterlogged soil or the occasional earth tremor. Tfs!

Hello Beverley,
All three pictures give us an excellent idea of these old walls.
You have taken the photos with a beautiful light.
The main picture has indeed the best composition. Very nice upper part too with the many leafless branches of the trees.
Best regards, Paul
