The motif of the road is universal. Road usually symbolises our life. Somebody said that life is something what happens to us while we are busy planning other things. We tend to think about our life as if it was a destination, but it is better visualised as a road. St Teresa from Avila said that our life on the Earth is like one night spent in an inconvenient hotel. Memento mori -remember about death, remember that you will die. That was a medieval monk’s greeting. It sounds gruesome but in fact if you contemplate your death, you realize how short is your time on the Earth and you realize you have to start living now, without waiting for better times. A late Polish poet wrote: “Hurry up to love people, they leave so fast”. I have recently watched a movie with Adam Sandler “The Click”. Brilliant movie. A guy gets a remote control for everything. He can fast forward to better times. He keeps fast forwarding and at the end of his life he realizes that he fast forwarded his whole life. He skipped everything. Remember: life is like the road. Motorway is faster and more convenient, but a bumpy and windy country road like in this photo, is so much more beautiful. And it is not the most important what car you drive but with whom you are sitting inside.

This photo was taken in Lake District National Park along the Wast Water.
