Photographer's Note
‘Uman - Rabbi Nachman’s Tomb’
Looking for a suitable place to interrupt the very long journey from Kamyanets-Podilskyi to Odessa, my gaze fell on the map on Uman. Yet it was still a bus ride of about eight hours from K-P to Uman.
In Ukraine everybody knows this town because of the Sofiyivka Park, a large landscaped park with pavilions, lakes, fountains and of course lots of trees. I must admit that I wasn’t impressed much by the Sofiyivka Park. More romantic souls will probably love it.
But my guidebook also mentioned another place in town:
Exactly four lines of the book were spent on the final resting place of the revered Hasidic Rabbi Nachman (1772 – 1810), the founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement.
I was more curious about where this tomb was and I ended up in a world unknown to me where however I was very welcome.
On the picture the tomb is on the rear right but I preferred to show a few overall views of the area where Jews came to pray.
Information from Wikipedia:
A large Jewish community lived in Uman in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the Second World War, in 1941, the Battle of Uman took place in the vicinity of the town, where the German army encircled Soviet positions. The Germans deported the entire Jewish community, murdering some 17.000 Jews, and completely destroyed the Jewish cemetery, burial place of the victims of the 1768 uprising as well as Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. (After the war, a Breslov Hasid managed to locate the grave and preserved it when the Soviets turned the entire area into a housing project.)
Since the 1990s there has been a small, but growing, Jewish population in Uman. The local Jews are mostly involved in pilgrimage of Jewish tourists that arrive to the town.
But given all over the country, Ukraine had 840.000 Jews in 1959, a decrease of almost 70 % from 1941 (within Ukraine's current borders).

Hello Paul, Very interesting picture from this room looking more like a library for Jews. Excellent interior pictures.
I was In Sofiyivka Park and I was delighted. It is very big and lovely park. I do not know if I am a romantic soul but I love parks and gardens. I was also in Uman. In the time of my visit there was some anniversary and the streets were full of Orthodox Jews. Here
the scene that caught my attentions.

Hello Paul,
Must say that you came to visit this place on a "low-season". During the Jewish holidays prior to the New-Year, most years around mid-September, you would not be able to enter nor to walk around town. Every years there is an air-lift of 20 thousand worshipers flying from Israel to this place - all are orthodox jews.
Fine all 3 indoor's picture.

Hello Paul,
This is a surprising and interesting photo. I didn't know about this place, but the description (yours, and in Wikipedia) makes me think of the book I mentioned in my forum message yesterday (in case you saw it). I agree that it was more interesting to show the human activities than just the tomb (it's on the left, isn't it?).
Today's entire contribution is a refreshing change from the usual TE stuff. I am impressed by the well managed light and sharpness and somewhat surprised that nobody seemed a bit bothered to have a tourist taking pictures here. I think I would also have been more curious about this place than the park, judging from pictures on Wikipedia.
Kind regards,
Gert

Dag Paul,
Prachtig foto werk, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,
John

Hallo Paul,

Hi Paul, interesting visit to this jewish place but after a long bus trip as i can read in your note. A lot of jewish in Ukraine, this is new for me. I'm still thinking in these days to the synagogue of Djerba burned by the muslim in this difficult economic moment for Tunisia. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Ciao Paul
credo che sia una bella esperienza vedere di persona un mondo diverso dal nostro e partecipare direttamente alle usanze di altri popoli che condividono con noi la stessa vita.
Eccellente serie di foto, ben esposte e ben dettagliate.

Hello Paul,
What an interesting set of photos. The cultural significance is great, and it's something different than what we usually see during travels. I had never heard of this Rabbi before, and he died so young. I like the details in this room, especially all the books. Thanks for sharing this.

Hello Paul,
I was thinking the same as Malgo that it initially looks more like a Jewish Library. Good sharpness with a pleasant diffused light. Tfs!

Bonjour Paul,
Amicalement.
Marie-Louise.

Hi Paul,
Lovely reportage showing a multicultural image of Ukraine.
The architectural details seem quite rich over the tomb I suppose, or was it a portal to the next room.
People dressed in traditional clothes add a nice touch here. I also like the inscriptions in Hebrew alphabet.
Very nice scene as if from another country yet.
Very well done,
M
