‘Odessa - Unknown but intriguing building’
I’m very sorry but I can’t tell you much about this building that is located in the center of Odessa. I found it a very remarkable building, very large and certainly not ugly.
I did not find information on it in my travel guide and no one in Odessa could tell me anything about it.
Although located in a busy pedestrian street nobody seemed to notice it. Everyone was very busy chatting, eating ice cream, having a drink or just enjoying the sunshine.
You could not enter the building either. The ground floor was closed off on all sides. If you look closely, you can see that on the picture.
The building with its many architectural decorations had a somewhat strange colour. In my memory it was more green than on these pictures.
In 2014 Fran Caparros (suomi_) had already posted a picture of it and mentioned in the title and the note that it was an old hotel.
Also on that picture the ground floor was already locked down.
Does anyone know anything more about this large building ? Perhaps Malgo or Gert ?
You'll find a closer look at the architecture in both workshops.

Hallo Paul,

Saluti

Good morning Paul,
Rightly chosen to take a picture of this beautiful building. The distant POV made the street action added to the scene, as people enliven the whole.
Excellewnt light condition.
Have a nice new day,

Good morning,
Interesting architecture of that building, indeed. It's quite similar to some in Timisoara, Romania. Well taken.

Hello Paul,
Sorry, but I can't help you. I don't even remember this building, which I think I should if I had seen it from this angle. It's magnificent and the workshops tell us clearly about the many astonishing details. How strange that nobody knew anything about it. Doesn't the Google map provide any information? I suppose you remember the location. Whatever it is, or was, this is a fine photo where the light is pleasant, the trees frame the view and lots of people create a nice atmosphere.
Kind regards,
Gert

Dag Paul

Heel mooi foto werk, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,
John

Hello Paul,
No worries about naming the building, we can still look at it and enjoy its huge size and architectural beauty.
Your notes confirm the atmosphere that immediately sense from the photograph, one of relaxed camaraderie and social interaction.
I like the aspect that you have chosen, to include the gardens, which does affect the sense of ambience.
You have been very skilled, to place the lamppost on the corner of the building so that each can be appreciated without obstructing the other.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello Paul
A very fascinating building indeed. Kind of strange that such a monumental building is that anonymous and closed, maybe it contains private appartments? Interesting architecture. Fine colours and light. The glimpse of the park and the lamp post was nicely placed in the foreground. Lovely work:) TFS.

Hi Paul
A welcoming sight of the green lung looks busy it must be popular amongst visitors. The beautiful building behind with typical architectural style grabs as central focal and plenty to see and admire. The catch light especially, is a plus point - really displays the charms of the edifice to the fullest. Fabulous colours that you managed to get most of it with good overall contrast. Another of your fine effort, Congrats
Best regards

Bonjour, cher Paul,

Hi Paul
I have to thank you for posting this large series of photos from the Ukraine...you've open my eyes to this country and to its cities and architecture - I have to admit i'm now quite intrigued and interested in seeing it all in person.
I see Malgo posted a unique building as well, in response I guess to your mystery building here.
Looks very majestic, powerful, bold, a building which holds something of large importance inside. I think its too classy and intricate to be a hotel. Who knows...lovely building it is though
cheers

Oi, Paul!

Hi Paul,
What I did is I typed in Google Image search the key words "Odessa big building". This building came as the first, maybe because coincidentally the word BIG is part of its name, it is Big Moscow Hotel (Bolshaya Moskovskaya Hotel).
https://archello.com/project/bolshaya-moskovskaya-hotel
It seems it underwent a major renovation in 2012:
"Restoration of facades with construction of two new floors above. reconstruction of the existing and now lost decoration and complete replacement of interior walls in a metal frame. The building is divided into three major functional parts: a hotel, retail premises, bars, restaurants. The building was constructed in 1898-1899, by architect L.L. Vlodek and sculptors T.L. Fischel and S.I. Milman."
so if someone visited before, like emka (2010) or holmertz (2011), they may have missed it.
This is the last photo which I found in your Ukraine gallery under which I didn't leave my comment before...
I wonder whether Russians would spare this structure taking into account its name...
You are so lucky you have visited all these places before the war. Great reportage,
M
