Photographer's Note

Having snowed all night and all day, still the snow falls persistently, gently and silently. The landscape is transformed into new, unfamiliar shapes and the sky glows an eerie orange over a silent neighbourhood. At last winter is here!

I was so enticed by the new appearance and unusual colour of the sky that I ventured a few steps out into my street this evening and here’s a shot I took. It was almost imperciptibly snowing but after a few minutes outside I was nevertheless covered in a white layer, as was my camera and lens. I set up the tripod and pointed the camera roughly at the scene as it was too dark really to compose properly through the viewfinder. Having set the camera to self-timer and to bracket, I just kept pressing the shutter and waiting for the camera to take the three shots before recomposing the image. In the foreground was a snow-covered car which I wanted to avoid so I carefully composed by looking upwards at the sky.

The colours are exactly as the camera saw them with no changes to the saturation or colour temperature.
