Explanation of the phenomena:
The lenticular clouds are more frequent in mountain than at the seaside. They are caused by a standing wave. The lenticular clouds are clouds of wave, which are formed when humid air is raised in the ascending part of the wave, when the raised air cools and that the water which it contains condenses in the form of water drops or of crystals of ice. Conversely, when the air goes down again on the other side of the wave, it is heated and the water drops evaporate. The lenticular clouds most known, because observable more frequently, are those which occur on the level of standing waves, themselves generally related to the relief. These clouds thus appear stationary, but the air and the water which they contain are in perpetual renewal. A famous example is "l'âne du Mont-Blanc" (the ass of the Mont-Blanc), lenticular cloud which frequently caps the Mont-Blanc, in France. Another is the "nappe" (tablecloth) of the mountain of the Table, beside the city of the Cape, in South Africa. Close to the coasts, especially when they present a certain relief, the winds coming from the sea are forced to go up, and there are waves (which are used besides by the followers of the hovering in deltaplane or other, and by the gulls) which can give place to clouds of waves. In mountain, the waves formed on the reliefs are not limited to the wave located just above the top of a mountain, a "wave train" are formed and been able to give place to a series of lenticular clouds, at the top of each wave (that's what you can see on my picture). Another type of lenticular cloud is frequently observed above clouds with strong vertical development, like the cumuli congestus or the cumulonimbi. This cloud, which takes the aspect of a "hat" of the principal cloud, is named "Pileus".

Wonderful shot, Isabelle. It's easy to see why someone with a "graphical" background as you would be drawn to this. I really like the soft light and the tones of blue, even on the mountains - and it's obviously putting the panoramic format to an excellent use. After reading your note, I feel fully equipped to start writing a scientific thesis on the matter. Very well done!

Que dire ? Rien c'est parfait !
Je cherche mais je trouve pas le detail qui pourrais me gener hormis comme le dit Avigur ce coté sur realiste . Masi peut-on vous en vouloir d'avoir reproduit a merveille ces nuages ? Bien sur que non au contraire

Very impressive panorama and informative note.
First I was tempted to remove slight noise in the sky, but after fooling around in NeatImage decided that slight grain makes this pic more lively.

bien vu , l'image est parfaite j'aime ce genre de nuage que je connais bien en Corse(Bastia) il y a souvent des altocumulus lenticulaire mais a cause du vent d'ouest . le cadrage est tres bon comme les couleurs .

Waoh! lenticulars! This picture is very impressive and perfectly illustrate the deviation of the air above the mountains in a wave system. The note is also very instructive although i already knew this kind of meteorological phenomenon often used by gliders pilots for their winter flights!

Exellent phenomena and the picture. Seems like aureoles of the mountains. I have already seen the similar phenomena above the Mt.Cavallo in the Italian Dolomites, but I did not know for the reason how they been created. Your explanation it had be corrected, because the Piancavallo its far away from the sea less than 50 km. Thanks for the explanation.

Interesting phenomena and excellent picture. Thank you for all the information. Other than being interesting I think the clouds are beautiful - the light coming from the side is really nice. Composition also nice, panorama is definitely the right format for this picture.

Cette photo pano est réellement exceptionnelle. Les lenticulaires spiralés sont remarquables. Le pano est très réussi. Est ce le montage de plusieurs Photos ? Je pense que le grain visible mériterait d'être éliminé ou au moins diminué.

Great photo and explanation of the phenomena. I am always fascinate how it is possible - I saw many of this clouds in Antarctica and Patagonia each time was just unique and amazing.
