Photographer's Note

I think that we might have been a little hypoxic flying at approx. 3000 meters when we passed this glacier in our little Piper Archer and I was thinking “oh nice, a glacier” but then I asked over the intercom if this was the Aletschgletscher and someone said that it was another one but that he forgotten the name :))) At home we were trying to figure out if it was the Aletschgletscher together with the map and google earth. I mean it is not so easy if you are never hiking in the area (the last time I was there was during high school), it was now winter (looking pretty different than the google earth summer version) and I have zoomed the situation a lot but in the end we were pretty sure. But if not, I am happy to learn which one it is.

The photo was taken through a scratched plexiglas window and I am actually not hanging outside … LOL … but I was rather pretty much secured in the seat belt instead. We were coming from France landing in Zurich maybe 40 minutes later with heavy snowfall just minutes after we had landed and rolled out. Lucky us but it was such a great flight that I am happy to try the limits every once in a while and we were in good hands with Markus who is a flight instructor and we were discussing during the flight what we would do if we could not land in Zurich and we might have flown back to Sion or to St. Moritz that had no snowfall expected. You have to be prepared for these things if you fly visual and even if not, you always have to prepare an alternative airport and the charts ready any minute … just in case.

I was asked to write an article for our aero club about this flight to Courchevel and back and I have explained before that Courchevel is one of the most crazy Altiports in the world and this is why everybody seems to be interested. If they have the article uploaded, I will publish the link for those who speak German. Just if you are interested, you don’t have to summarize what I write … LOL …
