Photographer's Note
It was a busy Saturday in the air. Everybody seemed to enjoy the wonderful pre-summer weather and when we finally landed in Grenchen, the ATIS (automatic terminal information system) told us that it was 26 degrees in the shade. We circled over Lucerne for a while, first crossing Emmen military airfield which was active (the German Airforce had a stop-over for refuelling and just landed when we entered the control zone) and therefore we had to communicate with the tower who gave us instructions what we had to do. "My pilot" told them that we wanted to do some photo stuff over Lucerne and when we began to circle over the town I heard the controller saying that we were doing some photo shooting and that another aircraft should watch out for us. I thought that this was pretty fancy "photo shooting" ... I mean hello, I am just some girl with a camera not knowing what I am actually doing, being up there thinking about shutter speeds and that the pilot was moving over the wrong building and that all went too fast and hoping not to fall down :)
Oh anyway, some of you may know Lucerne and that it is a very pretty town with its river, lake and the mountains as a background. Below you may recognize Kappeler bridge ... maybe not as famous as the Eiffel Tower but for Swiss standards a very much visited sight.

Hello Barbara,
I have been many times to Lucerne and everytime i visited the old Chapel bridge, but seeing it this way is really awesome. Never seen it like this, even not on postcards. So hurry, and sell the picture to a publisher.
Great shot...wish i good take such ones.

Great shot from the plane Barbara. Love the colors and the contrast between the red of the town and the green of the river. I like the framing of this one with the bend in the river which carries your focus through the picture.

Hi Barbara
Even from the thumbnail I immediately recognised this as Luzern, just by the diagonal bridge... and what a fantastic aerial view! The river is a stunning colour and adds a lot to the overall impact of the image, and there's so much detail to be seen. An remarkable shot!

Hello Barbara,
This photo from above imediately remembers me of Yann Arhtus-Bertrand and his traveling exhibition the Earth from above.
The view is very nice where you can see the differences between townplanning in the old and the new parts of the city very well. A good compo and very nice colors.
Well done!

Hi Barbara
Great view of Lucerne. I love the colour of the water and the way the famous bridge stands out. The boat's a nice addition too. You were lucky to get such a close aerial view.
I'll tell you a funny story. An Australian was supposed to visit the agency where I work in Lausanne and phoned from the taxi he was in saying the taxi driver couldn't find us. The guy was in Lucerne instead of Lausanne :-)

Hi Barbara,
I remembered your earlier aerial shots from Luzern, and checked them again. This one has better quality with no visible grain. This also gives a good idea of the old town. Good shot of a lovely place. Could be rotated a little clockwise to get vertical lines upright.

Hello Barbara,
Thanks for your critique of my "Young Street Artists" photo. I love your urban photo taken from the air. Very seldom do most of us photographers have the opportunity to take aerial photos. You took advantage of your opportunity and came out with a great image. Well done!

Ciao Barbara, I recognized the "Wasserturm" already through the thumbnail. What a glorious, wonderful lucerne shot. How on earth, or shall I say sky, do you dare to say that you're flying up there and don't know what you're doing with your camera? You know it very well and this shot is the best proof for that. I wish I would have a pilot for me too ...
Most beautiful!!!

quite unusual and rare aerial photo of

This is an excellent aerial photo. The river cutting threw the image makes for an interesting composition. I like how we can recognize the famous bridge and see it in context with the rest of the city. Did you ever play the computer game SimCity? This reminds me of it ;-)

Nice composition, Barbara--not easy to do from an airplane! It's very vivid and sharp, too--no haze that day, I guess. It's good to have a new angle on things! Regards, Ken.

From this shot it certainly does look like you know what you were doing Barbara - at least as far as the composition is concerned. The sweep of the river from the top to the right, with a Kappeler bridge a little off-centre, makes this feels nicely balanced. On the technical side, this could be a little sharper. I can't tell whether it is because you haven't applied enough sharpneing in PP, or whether there was a little bit of camer amovement shooitng this from your Cessna. If you think it was the latter, try a faster shutter speed - opening the aperture one or two stops is not going to make any difference because you don't need to worry about DOF at that height provided your focus is spot-on. Cheers . . . David

Hello Barbara,
Aerial photos by and large are not that impressive, but when the conditions are right, they can be spectacular. This is one of those times, where the results are quite spectacular. Your highly informative note is a lesson in geography and a slice of history. I had one unique adventure with a camera, flying on Lufthansa lat year that may interest you. I don't know if it has been done before on Trekearth, but unfortunately this service has been discontinued.
Warm regards and have a good weekend,
Bulent

Hi Barbara,
although I have never been to Luzern, I think I would love to get there after I have seen your picture. You took it in the right instant and show to people, that Luzern must be a very interesting city with its strange bridges and probably a beautiful castle.

great albatros shot of Luzern. I remember wondering between in streets a few years ago,
now I can relive the experience.
But one bridge is missing! I heard it was burnt down, did they not rebuild it??
Answer please. Janos

ah, Lucerne, one of my favourite places in Switzerland (together with mount Pilatus, where you can get ice cold beer at the summit). fanatstic view on this beautiful place, the green water nicely contrasts with the brown roofs. everything is just where it should be in the frame - the curve of the river slightly off center, the bridge and the ship in the lower right corner. really nice work, Barbara, it's a pleasure to look at.
with kind regards,
Kristine

Barbara,
This is very recognizable even from the air that this is Luzern. I have not been here the last two times I was in Switzerland. I would love to go back again soon. Very lovely aerial view of this charming city.
Thanks for taking time on your busy schedule to write me a critique. As for San Francisco, I do think falls is a good time to go. At least It was always nice for me. San Francisco is hard to predict with it weather. It look beautiful but it can change in half and hour with the fog rolling in. I was there once in April it was also really nice.
We finally have some heavy rain here and the cold front from Alaska. It so cold out side, and in the mountains there will be several inches of Snow great for skiing even in Southern California. if it clear up tomorrow we can see perfectly white snow capped mountains.
