Photographer's Note

This series of photographs is offering a short journey around Switzerland, a landlocked country geographically divided between the Alps, the Swiss Plateau and the Jura, bordering with France, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Italy.
Switzerland (the Swiss Confederation) consists of following 20 cantons (states) and 6 half-cantons: Aargau, Appenzell Ausserhoden*, Appenzell Innerhoden*, Basel Landschaft*, Basel Stadt*, Bern, Fribourg, Geneva, Glarus, Graubünden, Jura, Lucerne, Neuchatel, Nidwalden*, Obwalden*, Schaffhausen, Schwyz, Solothurn, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Ticino, Uri, Valais, Vaud, Zug and Zurich (*=half-canton).
From each canton I’ll post 2 photos and from each half-canton 1 photo, total 46 photographs.

The canton of Fribourg is located in the western part of Switzerland. It is bounded to the west by the Lake of Neuchâtel.
The canton lies on the elevated Swiss Plateau. In the west the lands are flat, but towards the south east of the canton, the lands rise to a hilly region. This region is commonly called pre-Alps but is part of the Bernese Alps.
The Canton of Fribourg borders the canton of Vaud and Bern. There are two enclaves within Vaud and one within the canton of Bern, as well as a large exclave on the lake. The capital city is Fribourg.

The photo shows a Castle of Gruyeres located in the medieval town of Gruyeres. The castle is one of the most famous in Switzerland.

It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance, built between 1270 and 1282, following the typical square plan of the fortifications in Savoy.

The castle was bought back by the canton of Fribourg in 1938, made into a museum and opened to the public.

Since 1993, a foundation ensures the conservation as well as the highlighting of the building and the art collection.

It is located 186km southwest from Zurich and 65km south from Bern.
