Photographer's Note

These two men were among the 15000 participants (including 4500 women) in the Stockholm Marathon last Saturday. I was going for one of my regular walks on Södermalm island when I suddenly found myself in one of the streets along the track of 42 195 meters.

I didn't plan to watch the competition, and I didn't even know when or where the runners would be on Södermalm island. As it happened, I first met them by coincidence in the nearest major street after I had left home. I saw the three Africans leading the race, already far ahead of the others after 25 km. But it was a crowded area, and I couldn't find a good angle for photos, so I soon left for other parts of the island.

About half an hour later I once again met the runners as they were approaching 30 km in another part of the island. Photo conditions were better here, so I stopped for a while to have a look at the more average competitors. The best runners had of course passed this area long ago.

I actually had another good reason to stop at this place for a while. There was something much more interesting to me than these runners, which I will show you next time.

In case you wonder, the Norwegian carrying number 2079 finished the race 5 minutes and 16 seconds ahead of number 541, from Sweden.

Two more photos from the Stockholm Marathon can be seen in the WS.
