Photographer's Note

I am not happy with most of my recent photos, so I made a very short test tour of my time machine to pick up today's uploads. I only needed to move back in time two years, and geographically a few hundred meters from where I live in Stockholm.

This is from late August 2018, on a Sunday that had been declared "Steamboat Day". Dozens of steamboats of various ages were to depart from Riddarholmen by the Old Town in the morning, make a fairly long tour of Lake Mälaren and return in the afternoon.

I was busy in the morning, and the weather was not so good, but I thought I would catch them from this viewpoint when they returned. The sky had cleared up and everything looked fine.

Unfortunately I only saw a few boats coming back to the city. I was late for some of them, and most of the others were late for me, so I didn't get the photos I had hoped for. In fact, only one of the boats in the main photo had taken part in the steamboat rally (the one on the far side). The boat closest to us is an ordinary local ferry (built in 1897) crossing the lake between the islands of Södermalm and Kungsholmen.

Riddarfjärden (meaning approximately Knight's Bay), is the last bay of Lake Mälaren before it joins the Baltic Sea between the Old Town (Gamla stan) and Södermalm, from where I took the photo.
