Photographer's Note

This is a view from the top of the volcanic cone, Montaña Bermeja, towards probably the most beautiful beach on La Graciosa Island, Playa de las Conchas. I am not sure where the name came from, we didn’t see any shells on the beach (conchas is Spanish for shells). I was tempted to get closer to the edge of the volcano to get the full view of the beach but to be honest I was a bit afraid. There was a very strong wind on the top so I was barely walking, and I knew it must be quite steep at certain point but looking at it I didn’t have a good feeling on at which point it will become too steep.

I mentioned before that it was very hard to get to this place. Indeed, from Caleta del Sebo, the only town on the island, on which our ferry has landed, you can hypothetically walk across the island to this beautiful beach in 1 hour or so. However, since they were making an asphalt road there, this direct road was completely closed to the public. You could rent a bike, which seemed like a nice idea, but it wasn’t, judging by the people who we have seen from the jeep taxi along the way, when we leaved them on the unpaved road in the clouds of sand and dust. Even the Jeeps needed to take the only available road around the island to get there, and it took about 30 minutes one way. Most people who arrived on the island were choosing another beach which is in a walking distance from the town. We arrived at the beach with a Spanish couple with children. They went straight to the beach while we started with the hike to the top of the volcano.
