Ave!
This is a place I've never properly been to- Imperator Trajani Pons- erm.. Trajan's bridge that crossed the Danube between today's Kladovo in Serbia and (close to) Drobeta Turnu Severin in Romania.
Built in 105 and designed by the famous architect Apolodor of Damascus, this pons maximus..erm..great bridge held the record for the longest operational archway bridge for 1000 years or so.It spanned the entirety of the Danube and it was 1135 meters long and some 19 meters high, and 15 meters wide. For more than 150 years it stayed in operation and helped the legions cross the Danube in orderly fashion with their feet dry too. It is to my knowledge, the largest military bridge ever built- it supported a full fledged imperial invasion after all.
This magnificent bridge was torn down by another Roman emperor,Hadrianus, who wanted to protect the province from barbarian attacks.
Technical notes: this not-so-nice photo is made with an old P20 Pro Huawei phone while the train was rushing along with some 70 km\h. The fact that it's not a blurry mess only speaks volumes on how far optical stabilization systems have gotten even in..phones. I passed by this historic landmark while going to Timisoara and the train did not stop... I had no option but to show you the remains of a bridge pier. Around the two bridge ends two castrae were built- Roman fortified checkpoints, or small fortifications if you will - Drobeta and Pontis.
