Castle of Silves

This is a photo of the Castle of Silves (Castelo de Silves). It has a long history, probably starting in Roman times. In the Middle Ages, it was expanded and one of the best Moorish fortifications in the country. It was damaged in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It has been a national monument since 1910. The castle is located in the town of Silves, which used to be the capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve, a nominal kingdom within Portugal from 1249 to 1910.
