Photographer's Note

In my travels around central Portugal, I fell in love with the farms - beautiful, solid, practical buildings resting in harmony with the topography. In one tiny community I came across a craftsman who made one-of-a-kind models of farms out of clay, white-washed like the real thing. Fortunately, as I was driving by on a tiny road (getting deliberately lost, as I like to do), I noticed a little roughly painted sign on a barn saying "exhibition." There followed a delightful hour exploring the sculptures which were laid out in a model landscape in the barn. The man didn't go out of his way to sell his work -- it seemed at least partly a labor of love, but I did buy my favorite model and am happy to say I still have it. After so long, I'm sure he's no longer there but even if he is I can't say exactly where -- or where I took today's image, except that, once again, it was somewhere in the hills west of Vila Franca de Xira.
