Photographer's Note
There is a lot to get to with this photo.
Lets start by explaining I'm doing something I never do...can you guess?
No, its not photographing people...its shooting directly INTO the sun. I always avoid doing it, for whatever reason. For some reason though, here i thought I'd go out of my comfort zone and see how things turn out.
Another thing i'm doing is allowing for the shot to be way OVER exposed, its on purpose. White skies in photos is something I always avoid, but here I just decided to go with it. Keep it over exposed and accept it, because this is how the scene is in real life.
We heard a band playing near the waterfront, so we headed that way. When we got here, there as this little girl dancing as if nobody is watching and enjoying the moment.
In the WS are 2 more shots if you're interested.
Hope you like this

Hello Craig,
Street performers are allways very interesting themes for photographers. This one from Lisbon is also very nice and eyecatching.
Good pov and layout as well as sharpness. Interesting and usefull notes.

Hello Craig,
This certainly is a photo outside your comfort zone, but you did a really great job in handling the backlight and adding the white sky against which the people and the dancing girl stand out very well. Great shot.
Lars
PS - I was a bit apprehensive about whether my CN Tower selfie would survive, but apparently nobody complained :-)

Hi Craig,in effect sometimes the white sky coming from backlights like that are not good to see,but this time i agree with your choice and your words, nice daily life scene from the Promenade of Lisbon in 3 different moments and well exposed. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Craig,
It's quite courageous of you to post a photo that at first glance doesn't look perfect. But I fully agree with your choice. It's really what it shows that's so much more important. And anyway the white sky and overexposed ground draws our attention immediately to the little girl dancing on her own, absorbed in her own world. She stands out in the white surroundings. The singer in the background also looks great again the relatively washed out sky. The first WS could have been an alternative thanks to the city view, but it doesn't have quite the power of this picture. This is a photo I would have loved to take. Maybe the less perfect exposure would have disappointed me at first, but I know I would soon have realized the strength of the composition and the little girl's magic moment.
Best wishes,
Gert
PS Looking again at the details and colours of peoples' clothes and their skin tones it's really a perfect exposure.

Hello Craig, a perfect title.
Your shot stands out in the thumbnails because you have been daring and gone out of your comfort zone.
Shot #1 also fits the title.
This one is good as we have the shadows across the textured paving, and the singer is almost in silhouette.
Thanks for sharing, Jean.

Hi Craig,
You have captured well the action of the singer and of the dancer. The point of view is showeing the details of the building. A good management of the strong light whic does hurt to much the colors output. Have a nice day.

Hi Craig
Into the sun can work (sometimes) and in this case it does. You've got the dancing girl perfectly and the singer works too, as much for her shadow as for herself.
cheers

Hello Craig,
Very successful contre-jour, it sometimes pays to go against your normal inclinations. You have managed the backlight well bringing out the colours and details in the clothing to good effect. The exuberant little girl, nicely juxtaposed with the singer, makes a delightful focal point. The long shadows contribute to the mood.

Hello Craig,
I would think that the street singer gladly becomes photographed, maybe becomes a star, with the child if dancer.
Composition and colours make your panorama picture very attractive.
Nice done, TFS.
Best regards,
John.

hello Craig,
I think you explain your photograph and the reason for taking it, very well.
It certainly took courage to post it but the reason is so apparent; that little girl, so completely wrapped up in her own thoughts, her own performance, is an absolute delight. She stands out very well against the b/g, her clothes, with floaty sleeves, adding the serenity of her performance. The singer's shadow sort of adds to the main, focal points.
I suspect that the seated lady in your w/s is also taking a photograph of the the young dancer.
Have a lovely w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Craig,
I avoid such backlight situations too. But your shot clearly demonstrates how it is quite possible to set the exposure quite right for the main subjects. And the result is literally brilliant. Timing with the dance steps of the girl is perfect. I also like her dress.

Lovely timing to catch that step. The singer in profile is really good too. The white-out sky (shooting directly into the light) is unusual, but it's worth just going out and trying those things and then surprising yourself with the result, isn't it?
Cheers

Hi Craig,
great final effect.
Yes, at first we learn how to avoid over exposure but then we realize that for some instances the proper exposure is secondary.
For the photos we usually upload here it is not as good but for portrait photos of people or some other situations it may be ok.
I realized that taking photos of my daughter. Some of them I wanted to delete for being overexposed but then again I noticed that she looks super cute in some of them and so I slowly shifted my opinion about it...
Great experiment, the third one looks almost like a winter scene.
Very well done,
M

Ciao Craig
sono d'accordo con te, questa foto non ha bisogno di cieli blu, qui è l'azione della bambina a fare la differenza, insieme alle ombre.

Contre jour technique well-used here too. The white sky is actually a good idea as it makes for a neutral background for the shot.
Great timing for the dancing girl too.
Have a nice Sunday

Craig, thanks for your critiques. That little girl enjoys the music played by the band in the bg. She doesn't look shy to dance in front of everybody. Pleasant daily life photo taken in Lisbon
