Photographer's Note

I just returned from a fortnight in Europe, giving lectures on the Crystal Serenity. It was meant to be a working vacation, but 3-4 lectures on a cruise that involved ten ports hardly seems like serious work. With well over 800 images, many of them worthy of posting on Trekearth, my problem was where to start. And indeed, the photo, Welcome to the heart of Prague posted by Grzegorz Oczkowicz inspired me to post an image of Lisbon, highly evocative of his photo. Both photos feature skylines of beautiful capitals seen from the water. As the Serenity approached the dock, I called José Pires, and he identified the magnificent white structure with the cupola that crowned the hilltop as the Pantheon.

I would like to dedicate this photo to Ana Dores, Gonçalo Lopes and José Pires. We had a mini-TE meeting in beautiful Lisbon. We walked around the Alfama District, rode ancient streetcars, and enjoyed lunch in a fashionabel restaurant, once used as a monastery. My three Portuguese friends, José, Ana and Gonçalo are seen in an accompanying workshop.
