Tarde, por favor (Santa Luzia VI)
(Late(r), please)

Displayed here is a typical Portuguese coastal fishing vessel undergoing maintenance on the small ship yard in Santa Luzia (Sotavento/Algarve).
The paint was stripped of and some planks of the hull were being replaced.
A picture of two ship of identical design on the same warf is here.
The high barrier is for the containment for the bulky contraptions (alcatruzes) used for catching octopus (polvo)and other fishing gear.
A picture of industrial alcatruzes is here.

The Algarvian coastal fishery is primary artisan. The fleet consists almost entirely of traditional wooden ships. A picture of a detail of the ‘Sulcador’, an other wooden ship and one of my first TE postings, is here.
It’s resting at the edge of wharf for several years now and is slowly disintegrating. In a way this mirrors the problems the Algarve coastal fishery sector has to deal with:
-catches are failing and the possibilities to better this situation are limited due to environmental considerations and restrictions
-the fishery businesses are small and the income is unstable since it’s being directly dependent on the haul. A part of the income is paid in kind
-its difficult to find people willing to work in the sector
-the taxation regime applicable to the sector and the social security contribution regime is seen as prejudicial for those working in the sector

The sector is dealing with this helped by the Portuguese government (supplying lines of credits and vocational training), the EC (subsidy) and the IMAR (Instituto do Mar, helping the businesses to work on their technological development and helping to boost the catch within the limits of environmental policy).

Tarde, por favor a is song performed by Madredeus from their 2001 album Movimento.

the usual PCS2 tech: cropped, adjusted levels, contrast, saturation and curves differentially; applied the USM, added a frame added and saved for the web.
