Photographer's Note

Even if we could stay in Porto for only three days I had to see the ocean and the mouth of the river Douro!
Those of you who knows my love for the sea will understand this desire I had. So one lovely sunny morning we took a comfortable bus which brought us to Foz do Douro (mouth of the Douro) the small town which lies just at the point where this beautiful rivers meets the sea. The town in itself it’s not interesting, apart from the numerous restaurants where one can eat fish, but the sight of the Atlantic ocean and the sandy beaches along the coast are worth seeing, at least for a seascape lover like myself, so we spent a relaxing day by the Atlantic, having a rest from the steep uphill streets of Porto! (:-) . There at the end of a long quay lies this nice small lighthouse. I found some info about it in the Portuguese Tourist Office web site.

Felgueiras Quay and Beacon, Foz do Douro

Neoclassical lighthouse with a hexagonal format, ten meters high, dated from 1886. It has a red balcony and lantern and a small annex building with plastered walls painted white. The name "Felgueiras Quay" was given because it was built facing the stone of Felgueiras, to the West. It was modernised in 1945 and automated in 1979, and was controlled from a distance from the Leça lighthouse. It underwent conservation works in the 90's. Before being deactivated in 2009, the light has a range of 9 nautical miles, issuing a red light every 5 seconds. It currently only has the sound signal.

Actualmente mantem apenas o sinal sonoro.
