Photographer's Note

A somewhat pessimistic look towards the future is often present in the Portuguese people. Its traditional music the "Fado" (literally, fate) is filled with this nostalgic, fatalistic sentiment that numbs our limbs to battle.

In Portugal Soccer is omnipresent. On the news, on discussions, on people's minds.

It was amazing to see reaction of the whole country to the Euro Cup 2004 and later the World Cup 2006 campaign. The support to the National Team galvanized the people's patriot sentiments and expelled their pessimistic tendency for a good while.

Well, at the meantime, the economic crisis that the country faced still endured, and continues to this day. One can argument against the alienation from reality that the football fever can provoque, and I agree with it. But I think that during those days the Portuguese behaved different, and this is a sign that we can work it out when serious commitment is present.

This picture shows the party that followed the Portuguese victory over England, on the Quarter-final of the Germany world cup. All the country got to the streets to celebrate: Merrily, as you can see :)

I used for the first time a noise reduction program (Neat Image), as the daylight was dim and the use of zoom further darkened the subject. It’s amazing what these little programs can do!

[May 17th] I've posted to Workshop another photo on the same subject.
