The Vila Franca do Campo village's marina / S. Miguel / Açores - Portugal

This picture was taked at March 2007 when i traveled to S. Miguel (Açores) at work. I always travel with my camera and since i was there i decided to visit the island and to take some pictures.

Vila Franca do Campo is a litle village with about 78,00 km² area and 11.150 habitants. It's located on the southern coast of the island of San Miguel and the local economy is based on fisheries, agro-livestock, dairy industry and retail trade.

Vila Franca do Campo is the oldest povoation of Açores (it was created at 1444 by Vaz Botelho) and it was the first capital of the S. Miguel's island.

At 1522 it happened a big earthquake at S. Miguel's island and Vila Franca do Campo was completely buried by the land that slides from slopes. It caused too many destrution and deads on the povoation and at XVIII century the village loosed the capita status to another island village: Ribeira Grande.

But enough of history... This marina is an XXI century construction (it was created at 2001. The Marina Village is located at the source of Vila Franca do Campo, specifically in Vinha d'Areia (Sand D'Vine). With an aquatic amusement park and an marginal alley, the Marina Village form a new pole of tourist attraction and entertainment for the City and to all of S. Miguel's island.
