Photographer's Note

The Wawel Hill on which the Royal Castle is situated is surrounded by defensive walls and towers. In 1241, after the bloody battle at Chmielnik, the Tartars entered Krakow. Residents of the town then took shelter in the church of St. Andrew and on the Wawel Hill. Thanks to their valiant defense, both places remained unconquered which also testifies to the strength of Wawel fortification at the time. Today the castle on the Wawel Hill above the Vistula river with magnificent architecture from different eras is a great tourist attraction.
