Photographer's Note

This picture was taken on the grounds of the abandoned children's psychiatric hospital in a small town - Owinska. The story of this place is quite terrific. The hospital arose on the grounds of the former convent in 1838. Then in 1870-1873 a several new buildings were built for a patients' needs. For its architectural delivery the hospital was rewarded on the International Exhibition of Hygiene and Rescue in Brussels. Howewer, the development of this place stopped due to the Second World War. It is said that durring the war the Axis soldiers captured the hospital, killed all the children in a nearby forest and then turned the buildings into the SS barracks. They left the area in January 1945. Falling back before the advance of the Soviet Army, they set the buildings on fire. Because of the huge damage done by the fire, the psychiatric hospital was never rebuilt. More pictures from this dark place can be found here.
