Photographer's Note

Geiranger is a small tourist town in the western part of Norway in the region called Sunnmøre. It lies innermost in Geirangerfjord which is a branch of Storfjord. Geiranger is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, and together with some other fjord regions has been named the best travel destination in the world by National Geographic. Since 2005, the Geirangerfjord is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Geiranger is under constant threat from the mountain Åkerneset which is about to erode into the fjord. This will cause a tsunami destroying most of Geiranger downtown.

Geiranger is also Norway's third biggest cruise-ship port receiving about 160 ships during the four month tourist season. Because fjords are so deep, huge ships, such as the one we see here, can sail along for hundreds of kilometers and come as far as their very ends and when docked there, at least seen from below, seem to occupy most of a fjord's water surface;) Here we see Costa Magica, a cruise ship for Costa Cruises, Italy. Just for an idea of scale of the picture, the ship has at least ten decks. She debuted in 2004 as a sister ship to Costa Fortuna. At 105,000 tons, she is one of the largest ships in Costa's fleet. Usually she pays homage to some of the most famous destinations in Italy, but in times of need can make it further; this summer it must have been sent on a secret mission from Italian Government to track our movements in Norway, because during our trip we spotted it in four different places (Geiranger, Flam, Bergen and Oslo) in five days...

The shot was made from one of the viewpoints above the fjord on a long and exceptionally winding road coming all the way down to the fjord from Dalsnibba mountain. The colour version is in the WS, I thought that this aged sepia treatment would emphasize more the claustrophobic mood of the picture, with this fjord "suppressed" and "closed" by dark steep mountains...
