Photographer's Note

Coming back South we decided to briefly stop at the international polar research station of Ny Alesund. The photo shows a typical late Summer midday. This is an ugly place (compared to where we had been before), but came in very handy for us. We must have given the real “polar explorer” impression: beard, smell and that patina on our skin! So, we decided to have a shower, do our laundry and control facial quality in a proper mirror! On the sailboat this was more tricky. The water reserve was for drinking / cooking, the seas were too cold for my taste, air temperature around freezing in September, our supply of fresh shirts limited and our mirror was nearly blind. A bottle of wine from the northernmost shop in the area (79° N) gave us the final feel of luxury!
