Molen de Adriaan

This is a new photo from my hometown Haarlem, taken last week in the morning, just after sunrise. You can see the mill Molen de Adriaan, located near the centre of Haarlem, on the bank of the river Het Spaarne.

Molen de Adriaan has been rebuilt in 2002 after a fire that destroyed the mill in 1932. The original mill was built in 1779. Despite of the fact the the citizens of Haarlem collected money to pay the rebuilding and also the municipality of Haarlem wanted to give a large sum of money (but the province overruled this), it wasn't possible to rebuild the mill in the 1930'ies.
But exactly 70 years after the fire, in April 2002, a new mill finally could be put into use.
The mill is mainly a tourist attraction -but is also fully functional as a corn-mill- and is an important part of the skyline of Haarlem. Since 2004 the mill is also an official location of the municipality Haarlem for weddings.

I posted another photo of De Adriaan for about 1½ year ago.

Wonderful composition and scene with so nice light all around.The windmill stands nicely into the scene with the reflections on the water.It gives a nice sense to me,a peaceful atmosphere.A very good one!

I have a similar shot from last summer, but with the same viewpoint. But these vinter colors are better.
I really like this windmill, and it is also wonderful placed in the middle of this charming town.

Hej Lars, yes I love it. Windmills are quite an attraction for me, because of their aerodynamic shapes, like helicopters standing on flat landscapes. This is in a urban enviroment but also having a great visual impact. In my opinion, it's even better than the other. Love the reflections and its shape against the pretty sky. Excellent shot!

Cher Lars,
La reconstruction du moulin est déjà une excellente initiative, mais, l'utiliser pour moudre du grain, voilà quelque chose d'intéressant.
Le plaisir des touristes doit être manifeste. Il faut dire que les Pays-Bas sans les moulins, ce ne sont plus les Pays-Bas.
Très belle prise de vue, mon ami.

Very nice sky and very nice reflexions on the canal. The windmill has a rather spohisticated architecture and stands very high above the near building. Different spots of side interest (red roofs, blue and white ofthe boats) provide an good diversity in colors.

Hi Lars. The reflection adds so much to the shot. It might be useful to have a person in the shot but on the other hand I don't see any place where they can stand! But the light and colors were both perfect. tfs Lars.

A fine capture from what the rest of the world think of as the country of windmills!
I like the composition with the distorted reflection, interesting to see the location in the middle of the town...

Hi Lars,
This vertical format really works well for this fine shot, emphasizing a fairly narrow but beautiful area, with the windmill and fine reflections dominating the scene. The sky is multi hued and provides great ambience, while even the shaded areas of the buildings provide a good view of the facades. Very fine work.

Mes parents possédaient une peinture de cette vue avec les mêmes conditions de luminosité.
Effectivement cette composition est très appréciable et parfaitement agencée par cet avant-plan qui donne une bonne profondeur.

Very interesting photo of the mill standing ON TOP of a building !
We do have a few mills in Denmark , but this one is really special .
I like the beautiful reflections of the mill and the colour of the sky , all creating a perfect winter image !
I took a look at your other photo , which is very pretty , and certainly a romantic place for a wedding in the summer :o)

Hi Lars - despite the lack of sunlight, colors are styill nice and vibrant, the sky actually looks better without direct sunlight, nice reflections too.

Van de vele mooie stadsgezichten die je gepost hebt kies ik er een uit je woonplaats. Het ochtendlicht komt erg mooi door langs de wolken en brengt veel harmonie in de kleuren van de stad. Fraaie reflectie in het water. Compositie mag er zijn!

Hoi, Lars.
Prachtig en zeer uitgebalanceerd in beeld gebracht. De framing, met de Adriaan precies op de helft van de hoogte en een beetje off center, is perfect en zeer imposant. In combinatie met de schitterende belichting/reflecties zorgt ook meteen voor enorm veel diepte in je foto. Een kadrage/perspectief die ik, met een oog op de toekomst, zeker zal onthouden. Bedankt!

the reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The length of the river is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the windmill. Have a nice day.

Hello Lars,
Now that you mentioned the mill was rebuilt in 2002, I wonder how did we not see this when visited haarlem in 02/2002, probably the work begun later in the year.
Mild morning light was superbly managed and brought out the colors from under the clouds shadows, and overall a fabulous sight to enjoy.
