het Spaarne

This is another view taken near the river het Spaarne that streams through my home-town Haarlem.
This place is not far from Molen de Eenhoorn that I showed you the day before yesterday.

Het Spaarne used to be the connection between het Haarlemmermeer (Lake of Haarlem) and het IJ, but now the river connects de Ringvaart with het Noordzeekanaal (North Sea Channel) since the 'inpoldering' (reclamation, creating polders out of water) of het Haarlemmermeer and big parts of het IJ (the river near Amsterdam).
Het Spaarne isn't a big river, but for Haarlem however the river has been very important. Haarlem is also called 'de Spaarnestad' (Spaarne City) and many buildings in Haarlem has Spaarne in their name: het Spaarne Ziekenhuis (Spaarne Hospital), Spaarne College and so on.
The part of the river you can see here is near the town Heemstede and the part of Haarlem called Schalkwijk, south of the centre of the city.

It was a bright day, when I took this picture. I was cycling a bit along het Spaarne. I only had to crop the picture to get a for me satisfying result, I hope you agree about that and that you'll like the picture!
