Photographer's Note
I like very much Callie's collection of birds. This morning, wandering on the small fishing harbour of my village, I caught this one:
Dutch: Storm Meeuw - English: Common gull (Mew gull) (I think... ;o)
As I'm not a specialist - From Internet:
This bird is typical of our coast in Zeeland. It looks like a small, gentler version of the herring gull. Despite its name, it is not at all common in some inland areas, though often abundant on the coast and in some western coast. They are now seen more often in towns and on housing estates in winter.

I like your framing of this image. The two white posts add sense of place and depth, and the white jet-stipe in the sky add a nice balance to the main diagonal line along the top of the posts and the seagull.
Unfortunately the jpeg-compression is too hard adding a lot of digital noise. Your image is only 32kB and limit is 200kB leaving plenty of room for a higher quality compression.

Lots of potential here (as I see it).
I'd straighten the post just a bit and crop in much tighter on the right and top. That will make your subject a lot more prominent.
Then I'd carefully sharpen to bring out the detail.
(I'd give you a Workshop but I've reached my limit and, as torben points out, you posted a small file. It's difficult to work with.)

I like the composition and the blueish, muted colors. It all works well together. The white post at the back adds a nice sense of depth.

Hi Vivianne. What I find interesting about this is the way the colors of the gull and piling are almost the same. The first thought that occured to me was that they had been painted together :) I think Bob is right about rotation and cropping though. But still, I like it as is too.

The composition here is just marvelous. I agree: Callie's bird shots are inspiring, and this one is very nice, too. It could use a little sharpening, but I really like the brightness of the image.

Viviane, I think you did well on getting such a good exposure on what is esentially white subjects. I love gulls, they have attitude, they are opportunistic and will grab an oppertunity to pilfer any food items left unattende. Die een is nie by ons nie. As a pointer on birds, try and get the beak in profile, the dof is more forgiving and the view is better. I will post two pictures of the same bird - one in profile, one head-on. Then you can compare. I, personnally, like the head-on view, but then it should be sharp from tip of beak to back of head.
