Drowned North

When you visit a Dutch city, a canal is never far away in the old town centre, so here’s one from Alkmaar. This canal is called Verdronkenoord (literally: Drowned North), one of the oldest canals in the city, probably dating back to the early 16th century. The name comes from the fact that the area around the canal used to be flooded and had to be drained before the houses could be built. The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk (Great or St Lawrence Church) can be seen in the distance.
