Photographer's Note
I took this picture on the way back from my 17:02 shot.
Here again, it was the pattern which appealled to me...
Text from Aquaculture Alliance:
"In the Netherlands mussels are mainly grown in floor culture on the mussel plots. Here in Bruinisse, our village with a rather important fishing harbour, the mussels are also experimentely grown in the so-called "Hangcultuur'.
In spring, the seed (spat/larvae) collectors are prepared and deployed in seed producing areas. At this time the Sleeving process begins.
Sleeving (seeding) is the operation by which juvenile or seed mussels are loaded onto mesh sleeves.
By the fall of the year the mussel seed will have grown to a size of 5 to 20 mm and socking season begins. The mussel seed are stripped from the collectors, de-clumped and graded into uniform size classes before being places into plastic mesh sleeves/tubes called socks.
The socks containing the mussels are then hung from longlines and the longlines suspended below the surface for over-wintering - Here hanging under these blue barrels - The mussels hang high in the water, where the food offer is optimum and the mussels need no silt or sand.
Because of this the mussels will grow fast and get them sticking out a flesh weight and and more fine taste and absolutely without any sand.
During the spring and summer of the year following the socking, the mussel farmer is busy adding floatation to the longlines as the crop grows and the mussel socks gain weight."

This photo is so strange (in a good way). It looks so unreal. For me it looks like buckets that merged with a mirror. Fantastic!

Oh Viviane, this is an amazing abstract shot of a daily scene! Loss of proportions, even the bird may not give some help to compare any thing. Nice detail, these three tons of green among them blue ones. I like the repetition of patterns from fore- to background, divided by some space of calm waters.

Viviane,
Very beautiful and artistic shot. I like this one very much, and you have an excellent note with it. The light is nice and the sharpness is excellent.
Good work,

Viviane, you deserve 3 points for the image and 4 for the note;-)
I think the image is fantastic, so simple yet so much to look at, you were lucky to have no wind at all, inclusion of the hangcultuur in the background adds so much debth, so I am glad you kept it, because some photographers may have gone after more abstract, tight crop. I also like the fact that among blue hangcultuures you find so many off colour. It's almost like a game, see I found green, yipee this one has some white, whoooh this one has bird sitting on it.
Like the panoramic crop.
Just lovely.

Hi Viviane. This one is fantastic, and surely one of your best. You did well recognizing the graphical potential of this view - and as if the foreground pattern of the blue barrels wasn't good enough, what really makes this one nice is the distant repetition of the pattern in the background. Very well seen and artistic.

(14000) 2005-03-20 10:16
Oh, that's a VERY good shot.. and like Peter noticed, a good part of the effectiveness of this shot relies on the fact we have a background that gives depth and recalls the foreground, perhaps we could imagine it carries on and on. Without it, it would have been a near to abstract point of view, with it, it's an idea of the infinite.
I think that looking at it, I prefer the old wooden posts raising from the water that are commonly used for mussel breeding... here it's like abandoned floating cans of a chemical. I would imagine the taste of it while eating the mussel... hmmmh, prrrrfft, tastes like soap... :-(

Gr. Jaap

Hi Viviane, I have been trying to sort out what I saw, without reading your note, and I could'nt. probably also becauyse this is not something that I often see, but also because there is no movement in the water whatsoever. It crossed my mind that it was garbage, but then so much, and all blue. Then I thought it was a piece of art, (And it is, but now I'm refering to your picture), then I decided to read your note, and I finally understood.
This is a beautiful image Viviane, I too like the fact that there's the same background .
I like your low angle here, and the repatition is very fine.
I guess this would make a strong image in B&W too.
I'll drop you a line

Jolie trouvaille Viviane.

Wow Viviane what a nice deliciously graphic capture this is! I like the chaos in the interspacing and position of these barrels; the two layers and the neg space between them works great too. Partly due to the very well rendered reflections, it has also a lovely unreal quality. Well I have no choice here, straight into my favourite list with this pic ;-)
Happy easter!

Oh, what a joyful graphical effect, Viviane. The tight cropping at top and bottom is really paying off. The barrels disorganized, yet organized, in two 'fields' - as if they were some kind of organic matter. It's almost not possible to stop looking, as they seem to change in a 3-D way all the time ("traveling through space"). The prevailing blue color, the still water and the magical reflections are all interacting in mediating this feeling. A supreme image. Well seen and a good job very well done!

wow!!!
this is like an illusion..
this is early morning time isn't it???
it's really nice...
i think if you're in this area again... and if you get similar photograph.. try to look out for a boat..
imagine a boat amongst the socks..somewhere on the upper half of the frame..
it'll allow me as a viewer to alternate between a sense of illusion which is the socks and a sense of reality, the boat..
ofcourse you'll need lots of luck for that :)
take care

Salut Viviane,
Quelle composition originale !

Great to see an image dear to my heart. Recycling food grade blue barrels for floatation in aquaculture, precious water containers seems to be global.
I like the stillnes of this image it truly refelects the swell of a full tide.

I like the water being totally without texture, uniformly gray( Except in the background where a light wind blows), it makes perspective disappear and flattens the foreground. The barrels seem to hang freely in a threedimensional space, if you take the emerged part and the reflection as one single object.
