Not all of Tiraspol is old and run down. In addition to the modern shopping center depicted here, there is a new Andys Pizza, a Moldovan chain now operating in the Republic of Transnistria. It might seem odd at first glance to see a Moldovan company operating here, because there was a bloody civil war between Moldova and the breakaway republic between 1990-92, but both have moved on since those hard times. You can see a unisex hairdresser in the front corner shop here. More info on the civil war here:

They still use the Russian Cyrillic alphabet in Transnistria. eg 'gas' is written 'ra3'. The rest of Moldova reverted back to the Romanian Latin script after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
