Entering Valletta

Time also now to explore some parts of the capital city of Malta, Valletta, located on a peninsula between two natural harbours on the northern coast of the island. This photo was taken at the start of the main street in Valletta, Triq ir-Repubblika, just within the fortifications of the city. Almost wherever you go in the city, you can see many of the enclosed balconies typical of Malta.

Valletta is located on the small Sciberras peninsula and, being still confined within the old fortifications, it has only got about 6,500 inhabitants, although the wider metropolitan area has a population of almost 400,000 people. The French nobleman Jean Parisot de Valette and 49th Grand Master of Order of Malta founded the city in 1556 following the Great Siege of Malta and it has been the capital of Malta since 1571. It is the southernmost capital of Europe and was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
