‘The Roman theatre of Heraclea’
Last photos in my series about Heraclea.
The Roman theatre served both for theatre performances and gladiator games with animals.
Construction probably started during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (° in 76 and † in 138) and ended at the time of his successor Antoninus Pius (° in 86 and † in 161).
The auditorium is horseshoe-shaped and had a capacity of about 2.500 spectators.
After the ban of gladiator fights in the early 5th century, the theatre lost its function and was slowly buried by erosion. Its seats were used for other buildings in Heraclea.
Information from https://bitola.info/heraclea-lyncestis-bitola/
Already mentioned with my previous two photos:
Heraclea was an ancient Greek city in Macedonia, later ruled by the Romans.
Founded in the 4th century BC it was named in honour of the mythological hero Heracles.
In the middle of the 2nd century BC the Romans conquered Macedonia and made it a province. For Heraclea this became a prosperous period.
Life in Heraclea died out at the end of the 6th century when it is believed the population moved to the present location of nearby Bitola.

Hello Paul,
The four photos you have posted today give us very different but equally interesting views of this ancient theatre. They are all well taken with fine colours and contrasts.
The wide, curving view of the seats and the distant hills probably makes the main photo the most attractive, but I find a lot of pleasure in watching the WS too. #1 is well composed with a deep view of the well built walls, #2 shows us beautifully ornamented fragments and #3 has fine colours, lots of horizontal details and human presence (including of course the statue).
Best regards,
Gert

Bonjour Paul,
La courbe du théâtre donne du dynamisme à la scène, La prise de vue permet de voir les détails du théâtre de Heraclea. La qualité de la lumière embellit les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Hello Paul,
In both photos we can see good restoration work and can imagine the place back in ancient times, when it was probably crowded and vibrant action taken place.
main photo beautifully shown with the mountains and clouds above.
Good afternoon,

Hello Paul,
Whatever your opinion of the Romans, it's impossible not to be awed by their building skills! This amphitheatre is amazing, especially when considering that it is over 2,000 years old. The design, with fine acoustics, is mind-blowing.
Your main photograph reveals the horseshoe shape of the amphitheatre, in a wonderful setting.
Your w/s further confirm the skills of these Roman builders.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Paul, the theatre is well preserved, not like the other pieces that i can see in your 2 useful WS. The perspective is great, perfect to show the lovely nature in background too,an example of roman empire caught in a great way! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hi Paul
It looks like the theatre is being used again like quite a few old ones. A good photo also showing the fairly rugged landscape around the theatre.
cheers

Hi Paul,
Great series of photos. In the workshop photos there are even more of the interesting preserved details.
Well captured theatre. I wonder whether it is so well preserved or rather reconstructed.
You have captured it very well with the context of the nature appearing behind. Lovely natural colors.
Very well done.

Hi Paul,
I wonder how big the city next to this place was, to make such a huge theatre meaningful. Your angle on the other end gives a good idea of the size. Surrounding landscape looks lovely.

nice series of the ruins of this roman city. I presume the last WS has christian symbols. the main post is very interesting with the repetitive shapes of the seats and the wild mountains ahead.
take care

Mooi bewaard theater, maar ook het landschap erachter speelt zijn rol. Toffe foto, Paul. Groetjes.

Hi Paul.
Heracleia is an archeological place that seems to offer a nice visit judging by the splendid photos that you are showing us, here the theater preserves its grandstand very well in an environment of wonderful nature, this vertical composition gives a wide view of both factors.
Magnificent composition and color.
Excellent brightness and sharpness.
Good job. I love the photo.
Have a good week.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Paul,
It looks like they have renovated the amphitheater. I would guess they use this place for performances. I like the overall view of the renovated theater in the WS photo.
Regards,
MT
