Photographer's Note
The famous Stone Bridge (Kamen Most) on river Vardar is located in downtown Skopje. Some claim that it was erected during the Romaoian rule, in the middle of the 6th century, immediately after the disastrous earthquake of 518 when the ancient city of Skupi was destroyed. Much more likely, however, is the second theory, according to which the Bridge was built in the second half of the 15th century (between 1451-1469) under the patronage of sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror.
In its original shape, the Bridge had 13 arcs and was 329 steps long (or 213.85m.; one step is 0.65m.). Its total width was 6.33m. Throughout the centuries, the Bridge was often damaged and repaired. There is historical evidence that it once suffered during the great earthquake of 1555 which heavily damaged or destroyed four pillars.
In 1944, explosives were placed on the Bridge by the fascists. But when the city was liberated the activation of the explosives was prevented and the Bridge was saved from a dreadful destruction.
The history of the Bridge is closely related to many incidents during the life of the Macedonian people under Turkish rule. In most cases, capital punishment was executed on the Bridge, which was then "decorated" with the heads of those who were executed. The body of a Macedonian revolutionary, Hristijan Todorovski – Karpos, after having been displayed on the Bridge for a while, was cut into pieces and thrown into the Vardar. In 1944, a large group of innocent Macedonian citizens were murdered on the Bridge by the German fascists before their withdrawal from Skopje.
For the citizens of Skopje, the old Stone Bridge on river Vardar is not only a means of connecting the two parts of the city (Old and New), but a part of the history of the city and its inhabitants.

Zdravo Igec :)
Odlicna fotka i prezentacija na kameni most. Odlicno sto si gi fatil i zgradite pozadi, so sto si go potenciral kontrastot.
Inaku poslednata rekonstrukcija na mostot ja dokaza teorijata deka mostot e izgraden od Justinijan vo 6-ti vek. Izgledot na turski most e postignat so postavuvanje na fasada, no vnatresnosta e gradena vo stil opus kvadrum, isto kako i ona parce zid sto stoi srede Kale, i e del od originalnite tvrdini.
Pozdrav

Hi Igor,
Nice photo of the old Stone Bridge in Skopje; it is probably the most photographed, most well known site in the capital. I would like to see less of the grass and more of the buildings.
All the best,
Anastazija

Hello Igor
I like the bridge at night and the yellow lights look like the ghosts of the people killed there.
I like Stephane WS with less foreground and more emphasis on the bridge.
Thanks for the excellent note in the history of your city.

Being a frequent traveler to Macedonia, I could not miss the Old Stone Bridge ( Vardar )
Youı really took it from an excellent angle and the reflections are great too.
My only critique would be " If only " you had taken it a bit earlier, when the sky was dark blue.
I wish you a very good week - Izzet Keribar

A good night shot Igor. You have captured good colours on the illuminated bridge. It's an interesting contrast between the old bridge and the modern towers behind. The image is a little noisy, probably due to the long exposure. NeatImage might help out here.

First of all thanks a lot for these informative notes. I knew this bridge before but I didn't know its history. You ave shed light on different aspects of its history. Very interesting indeed. I am planning a trip to Macedonia hopefully next summer and I am eager to see this lovely bridge and think what you have told here...Regards, Mehmed

Hello,
It could be a Roman bridge.
Many of them build by the romans in our countries survived the barbarian invasions and the middleage and are, still, in use.
By the way,I like your picture despite the backyard(building)
Well exposed with warm colours.
