a gondola is a traditional venetian rowing boat. gondolas are for centuries the chief means of transportation and still have a role in public transport serving as trangetti (ferries) over the major canals. during the 18th century there were several thousand of gondolas; there are a few hundreds now, most of which are for use by tourists while a few are in private ownership and use.
a gondola is propelled by an oarsman (the gondolier) who stands facing the bow and pushes, rather than pulls a single oar. contrary to popular belief the gondola is never poled, the waters of venice being too deep for that. a sumptuary law of venice required the gondolas should be painted black and they are customarily painted so now.

Very nice canal view with colorful gondolas. I like also reflections on water except your photo need some sharpening and vertical alignment. Congratulations.

Hi Benedict,
You've picked behind-the-scene Venice, nice of you to reveal the idle gondoles and the not-so flood-proof low brick walls. There's some overexposure, and though I don't point at this compulsorily, here it's actually a blot.
Nice tilt, it makes some sense with the french (maybe the Italian as well) second meaning of "gondole": as a verb, meaning to warp, to twist, to squirm, to wobble... depending on what undergoes it.
