Chia Tower
The Torre di Chia, or Colle Casale castle, is located near Bomarzo, but in the Municipality of Soriano del Cimino, near the hamlet of Chia.
It dates back to 1200 and over the centuries it belonged to the Orsini, the Lante della Rovere, the Borghese. It is located on the left of the Fosso Castello, also known as Fosso Rio, near the confluence with the Fosso Fontana Vecchia.
The ruins, visible from a vast surrounding area, include an irregularly shaped crenellated wall that surrounds the remains of a castle placed almost on the edge of a natural cliff. The walls are marked by two pentagonal-based towers, the first of which, at the entrance to the area, is 42 meters high. In the surroundings there are finds from various eras that document the stratification of the various settlements in an area inhabited since the Etruscan-Roman period.
Around 1960, during the shooting of the film "The Gospel according to Matthew", Pier Paolo Pasolini visited the medieval tower in a state of neglect and was fascinated by it, so much so that he dedicated the last lines of the "Poeta delle Ceneri" to this place (1966- 1967).
In 1970 Pasolini managed to buy Colle Casale, with his tower, and together with Dante Ferretti designed a residence close to the ruins of the ancient castle. A phase of recovery of the entire complex begins, the value of which today embraces a history that starts from the Middle Ages and reaches the culture of the twentieth century.
Pasolini's house-studio, built in the first half of the 1960s, is characterized by a reduced depth of the building and develops linearly following the concave shape of the ruins. Folded in on itself, totally invisible and unpredictable from the outside, the building is characterized by large windows that project onto a rich and evocative landscape.
There is a wooden pavilion intended for the poet's painting studio. It is interesting to note that the design of the house originally provided for a roof covered with grass which was later replaced during construction by a concrete roof. This first version confirms how the entire intervention was designed and built in consonance with the landscape and ancient structures.
