Cagnemora - Bomarzo (VT)
The Cagnemora valley is accessible from the Bomarzo cemetery or from the Piano Via Cupa locality. This whole area between Cagnemora, Tacchiolo and Santa Cecilia is dotted with a significant presence of Etruscan-Roman altars, some tombs, pestaròle, fountains and structures still to be interpreted and dated: therefore, a capillary long-lasting secondary road network must be imagined. he had to make these monuments usable, and of which a partially legible trace remains. Going down a little, you can see a huge erratic boulder detached in an indefinite period, but certainly very ancient, from the rocky ridge above and run aground on the rugged slope and plummeting downstream.
On this boulder, looking from the valley, you can see a sort of front four battlements on the first two two rectangular hollows have been made
On the front of the boulder a large and deep rectangular niche, dug vertically, presents a sort of displaced mini ceiling, furrowed by an equally tiny columen just sketched. recalls other rock emergencies recorded in the area: it could be a funeral shrine, a compartment for the deposit of cinerary urns. Perhaps originally it had a bas-relief decoration, an upper pediment and side moldings, of which one can still glimpse the faint imprint imprinted on the rock.
On the top of the boulder the flat rocky surface is dotted with a series of cavities, holes, holes, carvings whose function is not easy to understand. The most marked is a sort of rectangular basin with the upper edges profiled and sculpted to form a curb. The tank is flanked by a similar building at a slightly lower level. Holes of various sizes are highlighted on the external upper profile and on the internal dividing wall of the two cavities. Perhaps the former were used to insert vertical poles as supports for canopies in branches, reeds and foliage to protect themselves from the sun; the latter, on the other hand, allowed the passage of water from one tank to another or perhaps housed posts placed horizontally to favor the stretch of leathers or fabrics subjected to tanning, dyeing or washing. The entire structure could perhaps be a kind of tannery or even a place used for the beating, maceration and processing of vegetable fibers such as hemp.
A funerary function of the rock monument is also probable. The artifacts that arise on the outer edge of the boulder could be funeral dimples of a rectangular or square shape saved in the rock and positioned at right angles on the outer right edge of the structure. The ashes of the deceased were probably deposited inside, closed in special urns.

Hello Silvio,
A strange but fascinating monument created by ancient humans. It seems to be have been used for funerals but looks from this side like a kind of fortress. It's not easy to understand it, but it tickles my imagination and the two WS provide good complements.
Regards,
Gert

Hi Silvio,

Buon weekend,Luciano

Hello Silvio,
I like how this large boulder emerge from all the greenery around, which also adds a good natural frame. The textures of the stone are clearly seen in this fine and pleasant sunlight.

Hi Silvio
Remnants of an old structure, ruined & overgrown in thick forest seem keeping company in the wilderness. There's some good light that brings out the detail and life and this has a timelessness about it. Well done on all your efforts in compiling these great historic sight.
Best regards

Ciao Silvio
The forest setting gives this archeological site a mysterious mood and atmosphere a little like Siem Reap in Cambodia. The crenellated top of the structure reminds me of a castle watch tower. Tfs!

Hello Silvio,
My first impression was that I saw the top of a fortress with four battlements which is almost completely overgrown by the forest.
But as your note says, this rock monument is more likely to have a funerary function.
Beautifully taken with the dappled light on the rock.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao Silvio,
you take us for a trip to remains of an ancient culture. So close and in the very centre of a modern country and yet we still don't understand what has actually happened there and what is even the purpose of these old structures. It fees so adventurous to explore so close and distant places at the same time.
Great reportage,
M

Hello Silvio,
It may not be an elaborate structure, but its age alone is sufficient to warrant a photo.
