Chapel of the Holy Icon
Built in 1626 in place of the old sacristy. The construction was necessary to house a Byzantine tablet depicting the Madonna and dating back to the 11th-12th century AD, its history is directly linked to the figure of Frederick Barbarossa.
The emperor, in fact, in July 1155 declared war on Spoleto following the decision of the locals to pay the tax in the local currency that Barbarossa considered false. The siege lasted a week, before he managed to storm the village and destroy it. Barbarossa did not spare even the previous eighth-century church, which stood right in place of the current cathedral.
Peace between the parties came only after thirty years. Symbol of this peace found in 1185 was the donation to Spoleto by the Emperor of the Byzantine icon that is still kept inside the chapel today, which in 2009 was the subject of a restoration work. The works involved the 13 canvases, the altar and the walls.
