Lantern - Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
In 1644 the pre-existing Romanesque construction, with three naves divided by a colonnade and the roof with visible beams, was almost entirely renovated by the will of Bishop Barberini by Luigi Arrigucci, chamber architect of Urban VIII, who turned a dome over the presbytery, moved the transept and set the vaults on massive pillars.
The Ape, symbol of the family that destroyed the ancient Romanesque interior, still dominates the lantern on top of the dome of the Spoleto cathedral.
