Hermitage of San Cataldo - Cottanello (RI)
Small oratory carved into the rock on the slopes of a mountain, just outside the town of Cottanello, in the province of Rieti. There are no reliable sources regarding the period to which the first hermitage dates back. Some historians claim that it is prior to the tenth century, others trace it back to the eleventh century and describe it as a refuge and hermitage for Benedictine monks residing in the abbey of Farfa. They are attributed to the ancient frescoes that adorn their walls, painted between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
